Traffic fumes from individual vehicles are decreasing every year as engines become cleaner, but there are more vehicles on the road and the number continues to grow. In an urban environment typically 60-70% of the particles that we inhale are from diesel or gasoline engines. My research involves new engine concepts for fuel economy improvement, and the development of novel particle mass measurement for diesel emissions. This is vital for accurate calibration of software models of engine processes.
