MATLAB PRIMER AVAILABLE
This is to remind users of the MATLAB Primer that the latest
version is available via anonymous ftp from:
math.ufl.edu in the directory pub/matlab
The following files are currently available:
primer.tex Plain TeX source of the second edition
primer.ps PostScript file for the second edition
primersp.tex Plain TeX source of the Spanish version of the 2nd ed.
primersp.ps PostScript file for the Spanish version of the 2nd ed.
You are advised to download the appropriate file since it contains
a new copyright clearance statement as well as a few minor revisions
to the one you probably now have. In fact, you are advised to
download anew the latest version each term since minor improvements
and corrections may have been made.
While the second edition of the Primer is based primarily on version
3.5 of MATLAB, it is compatible with version 4.0 with the fundamental
differences noted. An edition of the Primer based on version 4.0 is,
however, under development. You will be informed here when is becomes
available.
As many of you know, the MATLAB Primer was written to help students
begin to use MATLAB. It is intended to serve as an introduction to
and *not* a manual for MATLAB. While its primary purpose is for use
in courses which require use of MATLAB, it could, of course, serve
as an introduction to MATLAB for others. It is intended to be
distributed via a local copy center.

NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT
Title: Recent Advances in Computer-Aided Control Systems Engineering
Editors: M. Jamshidi and C. J. Herget
Publisher: Elsevier Science Publishers, Amsterdam, 1992.
------------------------------
About the Book:
The previous book on this subject by the editors was published in 1985.
Significant advances have been made in Computer-Aided Control Systems
Engineering (CACSE) since that time, as evidenced by the contents of the
present book.
The previous book emphasized packages for control systems design. A few
commercial packages have become dominant on the market, and that aspect of
CACSE has not been included in this book. The focus of the present volume is
on the research aspects of CACSE. As such, it is expected that this book will
be the first in a series of Recent Advances in Computer-Aided Control Systems
Engineering.
With the emphasis on current research, the subjects have been categorized in
six topical areas: ALGORITHMS, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, DATA STRUCTURES,
ENVIRONMENTS, REAL TIME CONTROL, and SIMULATION. There are twenty articles
written by a total of forty-seven authors from fourteen countries. The authors
are among the leading authorities in this field.

or even offensive, just search for the next occurrence of star-dot-star etc.
and you can breathe easily again.
STOCHASTIC CONTROL -- the very thought makes you shudder, right? All that stuff
about nonlinear PDEs, stochastic integrals, Ito calculus, the notorious
Stratonovich correction term .... it takes you ages to learn, and then what can
you use it for?
WELL NOW THERE'S A NEW BRAND
featuring
*lots of applications
*no Brownian motion
*clear connection with good old dynamical systems as we know and love
them.
*everything done from scratch -- if you know something about dynamic
programming and you know what a Poisson process is, you're on.
*effective computational methods based on parallel processing.
Sounds good? Well, call your bookstore NOW and order

2. Piecewise-deterministic Markov processes (the basic model)
3. Distributions and expectations

contribute or would like more information about ETNA.
How to access papers in ETNA:
1. ACCESSING ETNA USING GOPHER.
ETNA is running a gopher server. Its hostname is etna.mcs.kent.edu.
If you are running gopher on your system the command
gopher etna.mcs.kent.edu
will connect you directly to ETNA. Provided your system is suitably
configured, keyword searches and the on-line-graphical display of
papers will then be available. The ETNA directory, "viewers", contains
the source files for programs that will provide most UNIX workstations
with direct-display and keyword-search capabilities. Contact your system
admistrator about installing these programs.
2. OBTAINING AN ETNA PAPER WITH FTP.
Papers can be obtained at any time from ETNA via anonymous ftp from
etna.mcs.kent.edu. A paper's location will always correspond to
its reference. For instance, a paper which is referenced as
"...,Elec. Trans. Numer. Anal., Vol 1, 1993, pp. 11-32", will be stored
in the directory "vol.1.1993", and its file name will be "pp11-32.ps".
To obtain that paper using ftp
a) ftp etna.mcs.kent.edu
b) login as anonymous
c) enter your e-mail address as your password
d) cd to vol.1.1993
e) get pp11-32.ps
To obtain only the list of titles and abstract for the papers published
is volume 1 of ETNA, proceed repeat a)-d) above but change e) to
e) get index
3. OBTAINING AN ETNA PAPER VIA E-MAIL.
ETNA is using a mailer program which will scan incoming e-mail messages
for requests and then e-mail the requested file to the sender. The program
was written by Eric Grosse for netlib and modified slightly by Arden
Ruttan for ETNA.
A PostScript file of any paper published in ETNA may be obtained by sending
an e-mail message to "mailer@etna.mcs.kent.edu" containing a phrase of the
form "send pagenumber from vol.number.year". For instance, to use
ETNA's mailer to obtain a paper which is referenced as
"...,Elec. Trans. Numer. Anal., Vol 1, 1993, pp. 11-35",
send e-mail to "mailer@etna.mcs.kent.edu" containing the phrase
"send pp11-35.ps from vol.1.1993".
To obtain only the list of titles and abstract for the papers published
in volume 1 of ETNA, send an e-mail message to "mailer@etna.mcs.kent.edu"
containing the phrase "send index from vol.1.1993".
The requested paper will be e-mailed to you in several pieces. The subject
of each piece of e-mail indicates the number of that piece. To
reconstruct the original file,
a) Edit each piece deleting all lines that are not strictly between
the two occurrence of the phrase "CUT HERE............"
including the lines containing those phrases.
b) Using the file containing piece 1, successively append
the remaining pieces in order to the END of the that file.
4. BECOMING A SUBSCRIBER TO ETNA.
To be included in ETNA's quarterly mailing list of the titles and abstracts
of papers published in ETNA, send an e-mail message to etna@mcs.kent.edu
with the subject "ETNA Registration".
5. SUBMITTING A PAPER TO ETNA.
To obtain information as to how to submit a paper to ETNA, ftp the file
"info-for-authors" which is located in the directory "etna-info".
Alternately you may send an e-mail message to "mailer@etna.mcs.kent.edu"
containing the phrase "send info-for-authors from etna-info".

Workshop on
ROBUST CONTROL VIA
VARIABLE STRUCTURE & LYAPUNOV TECHNIQUES
September 1994, Benevento, Italy
Aim of the Workshop is to bring together researchers working on robust
analysis and control via variable structure techniques or their
continuous counterparts (often) based on Lyapunov's methods.
This Workshop will be the third of a series. The first one was held
in Sarajevo, in former Yugoslavia, in March 1990 and the second one in
Sheffield, England, in September 1992. This edition will be held in
Italy in September 1994, *probably* in Benevento, a historical town 70
km from Naples where a new university with a school of engineering has
been recently established. The Universities of Salerno and Naples will
be among the sponsors. A week-end in Ischia, the well-known island in
the Gulf of Naples, will be part of the cultural and social events.
Topics of interest will be roughly the same as for the previous
workshops. Here is a non-exhaustive list:
o Variable structure systems
o Lyapunov analysis and control
o Analysis and robust control of uncertain (time-varying) systems
o Implementation
Definite dates of the Workshop and deadlines will be announced in a
call for papers, which will be issued this September.
The Workshop will last three days. In order to favor discussion, as
well as exchange and blending of ideas, organizers would prefer to have
(relatively) long presentations and no parallel sessions. Papers will
be accepted on the basis of peer evaluation of an extended draft.
Workshop proceedings will be published; moreover, organizers will
select the best papers and dispose of their publication in a book after
a further writing and reviewing process (a similar procedure applied for
the workshop in Sheffield whose selected proceedings will be published
by Springer-Verlag).

1994 American control Conference
June 29 to July 1 In cooperation with IFAC
Stouffer Harborplace Hotel
Baltimore, Maryland
The American Automatic Control Council will hold the thirteenth American
Control Conference (ACC) Wednesday through Friday, June 29-July 1, 1994 at
the Stouffer Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. Held in cooperation
with the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), this
conference will bring together people working in the fields of control,
automation, and related areas from the American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics (AIAA), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE),
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Association of Iron and
Steel Engineers (AISE), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
(IEEE), Instrument Society of America (ISA) and the Society for Computer
Simulation (SCS).
Both contributed and invited papers will be included in the program. The
ACC will cover a range of topics relevant to theory and practical
implementation of control and automation. Topics of interest include but
are not limited to: robotics, manufacturing, guidance and flight control,
power systems, process control, measurement and sensing, identification and
estimation, signal processing, modeling and advanced simulation, fault
detection, model validation, multivariable control, adaptive and optimal
control, robustness issues, intelligent control, expert systems, neural
nets, industrial applications, and control education.
Call for Contributed Papers
The 1994 ACC Program Committee is soliciting two types of contributed papers
in all areas of control and automation: (i) regular papers that describe the
work in some detail, and (ii) short papers that present recent research
results. All papers accepted for presentation must appear in the Conference
Proceedings, where regular papers will be allotted 5 pages and short papers
will be allotted 2 pages. Prospective authors of regular papers should
submit 6 copies of the complete manuscript (marked "1994 ACC") to a Society
Review Chair by September 15, 1993. At the author's request, regular papers
will be considered for publication in a society's journal provided the
submission rules for the journal are followed. Short papers consisting of a
3-4 page summary should be submitted to the Program Vice-Chair for
Contributed Sessions by September 15, 1993. The author's society
affiliation, if any, should be indicated on the short paper summary, along
with a list of keywords.
Student Best Paper Award
Primary and first-listed authors of regular papers who are students at the
time of submission can apply for this award. Up to five finalists will be
chosen based on the written paper and will be awarded limited travel grants
to attend the Conference. The final selection will be made at the
Conference and will be based on both the written paper and the student's
presentation. The winner will receive a plaque at the dinner banquet. To
apply, submit your paper through the regular procedure. Then send a copy of
the paper together with a cover letter from your major professor (advisor),
to the Program Chair. The letter should be on University letterhead and
should certify that the eligibility conditions are satisfied. The deadline
for application is the same as the deadline for submission of regular
papers.
Call for Invited Sessions
The Program Committee is also soliciting proposals for invited sessions for
the conference. Prospective organizers should contact the Program
Vice-Chair for Invited Sessions before August 15, 1993 for the appropriate
forms. The completed forms must be returned to him by September 15, 1993.
ACC Workshops
The Organizing Committee intends to arrange tutorial workshops to be held in
conjunction with the 1994 ACC. Suggestions are solicited for appropriate
subjects. Potential organizers should contact the Workshop Chair.
Schedule Summary
August 15, 1993: Deadline for contacting the Program Vice-Chair for Invited
Sessions regarding proposed invited sessions.
