LAUB (laub@ece.ucsb.edu) ELECTION OF IEEE DIVISION X (TEN) DIRECTOR You will soon receive in the mail from IEEE a ballot for the election of a new Division X Director. The Division X Director represents the following "Systems and Control" Societies and Councils on the IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB): Control Systems; Engineering in Medicine and Biology; Industrial Electronics; Information Theory; Neural Networks; Robotics and Automation; Systems, Man, and Cybernetics. This is a two-year position and the outgoing Director is Vince Poor, former President of the Information Theory Society (and an active member of the Control Systems Society). It has been my great pleasure this year to nominate Abraham H. Haddad, current President of the Control Systems Society, as Division X Director to succeed Vince. I strongly and enthusiastically urge you to vote for him. I am confident that if elected Abe will serve us both conscientiously and effectively in this important position. Abe has a long history of service to the IEEE. He has a perspective far beyond that of the Control Systems Society. He belongs to Information Theory, Neural Networks, and Robotics and Automation. In addition, he has substantial technical interests in and knowledge of other Division X entities. Abe has served on PUB, TAB, and TAB/USAB R&D Committees and he has extensive service in Publications, Meetings, and Finances. This breadth of service gives Abe an enormously valuable experience base from which to draw in representing the Division X Societies effectively at TAB and throughout the IEEE. Abe is held in high regard technically by his colleagues throughout the world. His administrative experience as current head of a large EE and CS department at Northwestern University will also be valuable as Division X Director. In addition, he has governmental experience as a Program Director at NSF. In summary, let me say that I am delighted to offer this statement of support for Abe Haddad. He is an individual of great vision, integrity, and energy. His past experience in academia, government, and industry provides him with a balanced perspective on critical issues facing the IEEE. In fact, when it comes to the intricacies and subtleties of the IEEE, many of you know that Abe has been the consummate "information oracle" for the Control Systems Society for many years. We need a person like Abe Haddad to represent our professional and technical interests in IEEE. PLEASE VOTE FOR ABE HADDAD FOR DIVISION X DIRECTOR. Alan J. Baillieul EDITORIAL TRANSITION FOR THE IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON AUTOMATIC CONTROL After three years and six months as Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, N. Harris McClamroch has stepped down. He had previously served as Associate Editor for Technical Notes and Correspondence from March 1985 through December 1988. Since July 1, John Baillieul has been serving in the newly created position of Editor-in-Chief, and Tamer Basar has moved into the position of Editor for Technical Notes and Correspondence. A significant change in the editorial operation of the Transactions is that there is now an Editor for Conference Papers, Michael Polis, who will manage the reviews of papers submitted to the ACC and CDC. *.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.** Contributed by: flores@siam.org REMINDER ON SIAM CONF CONTROL AND APPLICS -- September 17-19, 1992 DATES TO REMEMBER --- August 28, 1992 --- Deadline for hotel reservations September 4, 1992-- Deadline for preregistration September 17-19, 1992 Conference dates The SIAM Conference on Control and Its Applications will be held at the Radisson Hotel Metrodome, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Professor Benkart will deliver ten lectures acquainting researchers and graduate students with Lie theory and combinatorics, and disseminating information presently unfolding about both areas and their applications throughout mathematics. The interaction between combinatorics and representation theory has been a recurrent theme throughout twentieth century mathematics, from the work of Schur at the beginning of this century, through Kac-Moody algebras and quantum groups. Each advance in the theory has found application (e.g. invariant theory, differential equations, the chromodynamics of quarks). Professor Benkart's lectures will survey the history of this interaction, present recent results, and discuss open problems. From 1963 through 1976, the Department held a series of Holiday Symposia during the winter recess. The lecturers were Samuel Eilenberg, Mark Kac, I.M. Singer, Saunders MacLane, Paul J. Cohen, Irving Kaplansky, George W. Whitehead, Herman Chernoff, Errett Bishop, Raoul Bott, Gian-Carlo Rota, John Tate, and A.S. Wightman. In 1988, both NMSU and the AMS celebrated their centennials and the series was reinstated at that time. The last four symposium speakers and topics were: John Tate, Fermat's Last Theorem, Joan Birman, Braids and Knots, Douglas C. Ravenel, Homotopy Theory, and J.L. Selfridge and J.S. Devitt, Software Systems and Mathematical Research. Las Cruces is located at the intersection of Interstates 10 and 25 in the sunny Mesilla Valley, 40 miles north of El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico. The scenery is spectacular, the weather is usually very nice and mild during the winter months. The Department extends its invitation to all interested mathematicians. Rooms at the Holiday Inn de Las Cruces/Plaza Suites complex will be available for $28.00 per room for up to four people in the room. This complex has been rated four stars by the AAA and is a short (one mile) walk to the NMSU campus. Assistance in transportation to and from El Paso International Airport will be be provided. Funding for limited support for the participation of graduate students and faculty has been requested from the National Science Foundation. Nevertheless, participants are urged to seek travel funds from their home institutions. Inquiries should be directed to: David Finston, dfinston@nmsu.edu, Susana Salamanca-Riba, ssalaman@nmsu.edu, or Robert J. Wisner, Department of Mathematical Sciences, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, 88003. Please let your colleagues, or anyone else who might be interested, know of this symposium. *.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.** Contributed by A. H. We would like to include in this volume only high quality papers related to this important area of decision-making. For this reason we would like to invite you to consider submitting a paper for this issue. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely yours, Evangelos Triantaphyllou, Ph.D. (address, email, phone, and fax below) CALL FOR PAPERS Papers are invited for a special volume entitled "FUZZY DECISION MAKING," edited by Drs. Freerk A. Lootsma, Panos M. Pardalos, and Evangelos Triantaphyllou. This volume will be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. In the last few years there has been a large amount of work in areas which combines developments in fuzzy theory and decision making. Candidate topics include, but are not limited to, fuzzy multi-attribute decision making, estimation of fuzzy data for decision making, evaluation of fuzzy methods, and applications of fuzzy decision making. The purpose of this book is to cover a spectrum of recent results in the theory of fuzzy decision making and its applications in modern engineering and scientific problems. Manuscripts should be no more than 30 double spaced, single-sided pages including all text figures and references. Papers must not have been published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts should have a title page that includes the title of the paper; full name, affiliation, postal address, electronic address, telephone number and fax number of all authors; the paper should include an abstract and a list of keywords that identify the central issues of the manuscript's content. Deadlines --------- Four (4) copies of the full Manuscript: October 1, 1992 Notification of Decisions: December 1, 1992 All papers will be reviewed by at least two referees.
