PhD Assistanships: Bio-Mechatronic Design of Robotic Gait Trainer
Vacancy (no. 02/001)

The goal of the LOPES project is to develop and evaluate a robotic gait
trainer to support the gait training of patients who are not able to

PhD Assistantship: Geometrical Methods for Complex Dynamical Systems

The PhD candidate will perform research in the framework of the GeoPlex
project: with seven European partners, this project investigates new control
techniques applied to complex systems (nonlinear, multi-components),
using the theoretical tools offered by the Hamiltonian framework.

The focus of the research in Leuven is on haptic robot interfaces and walking
robots, but co-operation and exchange with other partners are a must. The goal
of the research is not just to study complex systems from a theoretical point
of view, but certainly also to perform experiments. These will be done on one
of the various robotic systems already available in our mechatronics and
robotics labs.

The ideal candidate has a solid background in control theory, and is eager to
learn about the mathematics of nonlinear systems, using the differential
geometry of Hamiltonian systems as a guide.

PhD, PDF: in the CIRCE project, DE, UK, BE

The CIRCE project is a 3-year EC-funded project that is part of the
Life-like Perception Systems (LPS) proactive initiative directed
towards creating integrated perception-response systems that are
inspired by the sophistication of solutions adopted by living systems
(http://www.cordis.lu/ist/fetbi-in.htm). It is scheduled to start May,
1st, 2002.

http://www.mech.kuleuven.ac.be/pma/staff/jobs_en.phtml

The positions at the different labs are offered preferentially at a
postdoc level, or --in case of a well qualified candidate-- at the
level of a PhD-student. They are available from May 1st, 2002 for the
entire duration of the project. Extensive collaboration between
the labs is a must.

The CIRCE project's goal is to reproduce, at a functional level, the
biosonar system of bats by constructing a miniature bionic bat
head. This head will be an integrated perception-action system of
similar size to a real bat head (a few centimeters) that matches the
relevant acoustics. It will consist of an emission/reception system
capable of generating/processing bat vocalizations in real-time, a
multi-degree of freedom mechanical system to allow realistic pinnae
(ear flaps) movement and shape control as well as neuromorphic,
on-board signal processing hardware.

System features will be evolved to suit natural biological perception
tasks and the results will be used to systematically investigate how
the world is not just perceived but actively explored by bats. Therefore
the project combines an ambitious engineering agenda (constructing the
bionic head itself) with a likewise ambitious scientific agenda (gain more
insight into neural sensory-data encoding from using the head in biosonar
tasks routinely executed by bats).

CIRCE is a multidisciplinary project that requires collaboration between
research teams with various scientific backgrounds making good team skills
an important asset for everyone involved. To make possible such extensive,
cross-border collaboration the project includes significant funding for
travel within Europe for (extended) visits/collaborations with the
laboratories of the consortium partners (in Germany, UK, and Belgium).

CALL FOR PAPERS
SPECIAL ISSUE ON EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR ACTIVE NOISE
AND VIBRATION CONTROL SYSTEMS

In many industrial applications, noise and vibration are important problems.
The conventional method of treatment is to redesign the system or to use
passive damping. The former could be a costly exercise, while the latter is
only effective at higher frequencies. Active noise and vibration control
(ANVC) systems have emerged as viable technologies to fill this low-frequency
gap.

This special issue is aimed at sketching a broad perspective of the field by
collecting high quality papers related to emerging technologies for ANVC
systems. Some of the areas of interest are:
 * Novel transducers, such as smart material transducers and MEMS for
   ANVC systems.
 * Emerging Industrial applications of ANVC systems.
 * Spatial control of vibration and noise.
 * Robust control of vibration and noise.
 * Active structural control.
 * Active control of structure-borne sound.
 * Active control of vibration transmission.

Only contributions which have practical results obtained from laboratory
scale or industrial scale apparatus will be included. Papers must contain
high-quality original contributions and be prepared in accordance with the
standards of Control Engineering Practice.

Seven copies of the complete manuscript should be submitted by
September 1, 2002 to one of the Guest Editors below:

Call for Papers European Journal of Control Special Issue:
"Design and optimisation of restricted complexity controllers"

Guest Editors: I. D. Landau, A. Karimi, H. Hjalmarsson

The use of model based control (MBC) combined with robust control design for
dynamic systems of significant dimension leads to controllers of high
complexity. However in many industrial areas there are strong constraints for
the complexity (order) of the controllers to be implemented and therefore the
design of restricted complexity controllers is a very important issue.

Several approaches to this problem can be considered: model or controller
order reduction preserving the stability and the performance of the closed-
loop system, direct design of restricted complexity controller based on high-
order models and the tuning and optimisation of restricted complexity
controllers on the basis of the data acquired on the system.

The objective of the special issue is to give a view of the current state of
the art in the design and optimisation of restricted complexity controllers.

A benchmark problem related to an active suspension system is also provided
(the benchmark is the result of the collaboration between the Institut
d'Automatique of Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne and the
Laborotoire d'Automatique de Grenoble of Institut National Polytechnique de
Grenoble). The benchmark problem contains all the steps of a control design
problem from data acquisition, modeling and identification, robust controller
design to controller evaluation and final tuning with experiments on the real
system. The objective is to design the simplest controller which meets the
control specifications. The authors are encouraged to give a solution to the
benchmark problem, although the participation in the benchmark is not a
necessary condition for submitting a paper to the special issue. However, an
application of the proposed approaches to the benchmark will give a unified
presentation and facilitate the comparison for the readers.

The information about the paper submission to the special issue as well as
the details of the benchmark problem is available on the web site of European
Journal of Control : http://www-ejc.ensieg.inpg.fr

The deadline for paper submission (submission by e-mail) is April 30, 2002.
The manuscripts should be submitted by e-mail (see instructions for authors)
and the cover message should mention "special issue on design and
optimisation of restricted complexity controllers". Prospective authors are
