                            SIAM Student Paper Prizes

The annual SIAM Student Paper Prizes will be awarded during the 2001
SIAM Annual Meeting, July 9-13, at the Town & Country Hotel in San
     Diego, California.

If you are a student or know of a student who would like to take part
in the competition, here are the details:

The authors of the three best papers in applied and computational
mathematics written by students and submitted to SIAM will receive a
$1,000 cash prize and a framed calligraphed certificate as well as
gratis registration for the meeting. There is no provision for travel
     expenses associated with the prize.

Papers must be singly authored and not previously published or
submitted for publication to be eligible for consideration. To
qualify, authors must be students in good standing who have not
received their PhDs at the time of submission.

In submitting their work for publication, authors are asked to
consider SIAM journals. However, student paper prize winners are not
guaranteed publication in any SIAM journal; all papers submitted to
SIAM journals are subject to the same refereeing process and
     standards.

Submissions to the student paper competition must be received in
the SIAM office before February 16, 2001.

Submissions, which must be in English, can be sent by regular mail or
fax. Each submission must include (1) an extended abstract NOT LONGER
THAN 5 PAGES (including bibliography); (2) the complete paper, which
will be used solely for clarification of any questions; (3) a statement
by the student's faculty advisor that the paper has been prepared by
the author indicated and that the author is a student in good
standing; (4) a letter by the student's faculty advisor describing and
evaluating the paper's contribution; and (5) a short biography of the
     student.

Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, and quality
     of exposition.

The winners will be notified by April 25, 2001.

George MONTEFIORE was born in England in 1832. Coming to Belgium in 1839, he
became a naturalised Belgian Citizen in 1882.Granted an engineering degree by
the University of Liege, he foresaw among the very first the upheaval which the
coming electricity would bring in the evolution of techniques and the need for
a specific education and training of engineers and technicians in these new
fields.

As early as 1883, he established as part of the Mining School of Liege
University, one of the first university-level electrotechnical schools in the
world: the Montefiore Institute. A few years later under his direction was
created the Association of Engineers graduated from the Montefiore Electrical
Institute - A.I.M. To complete his work and by a legacy, he enabled the
creation of a Foundation whose aim nowadays is to award every five years a
monetary prize to an individual in recognition of outstanding achievements
in research and development in the fields of electrical science and
engineering: electrotechnology - electronics - telecommunications -automatic
control - computer science.

2000 INTERNATIONAL AWARD

The next George Montefiore International Prize which amounts to 15000,-- Euros
will be awarded in 2000. The deadline for the submission of nominations is

Call for cooperation in dynamic game simulation

We invite for cooperation a research group in computing and simulation.

State of the art (what we have)

We have developed a technique for complete solution of a class of
pursuit evasion dynamic games on two dimensional manifolds. The set of
possible game spaces includes the following two dimensional surfaces:
two-parameter family of second order surfaces of revolution (containing
the cone as a particular case), the euclidian plane with a convex
bounded obstacle, two-sided plane with several zero-diameter holes
through which the players (moving points) can pass from one side to another
one.

We have several preliminary programs for numerical construction of
equivocal singular characteristics, optimal feedbacks in the second subdomain.
We have as well simulation of the games on cone in Visual C. In a user-friendly
environment you input the positions of players and watch them playing using
different strategies of your choice.

What we need.

A group of people with area of expertise in advanced numerical methods
and computer simulation. We want to create a software for computer simulation
of the optimal paths in the game, or optimal response of one player to
some prescribed (non-optimal) behavior of the other. Usage of the cartoon
animation will make the product more attractive for a user.

What we expect.

A book plus software. The book will have the following educational goals.
The reader can get acquainted with the notion of the manifold and local
coordinates, fundamentals of the calculus of variation, including Euler
and Hamilton formalism for the problem with homogeneous Lagrangian, the
theory of focal conjugate point, differential games, elements of the
dynamic programming, Isaacs-Bellman equation, generalized solutions and
characteristics. The software will make more visual many of these notions.
We do notexclude a certain commercial aspect as well, especially in the
case of improved animation.

Topic: Iterative experiment design for the modeling of fed-batch bioprocesses
Start: as soon as possible
Description:

A one-year postdoc position is available at the Control Laboratory, Faculty
of Information Technology and Systems, Delft University of Technology. The
research topic is iterative experiment design for the modeling and
identification of pharmaceutical processes. The project is a part of the
M3 DIOC project: "Mastering the Molecules in Manufacturing" and it is carried
out in a close cooperation with the Kluyver Laboratory for Biotechnology
(Prof. J.J. Heijnen and Dr. Preben Krabben) and DSM Anti-Infectives,
Delft.

Biopharmaceuticals are usually produced in batch or fed-batch fermentation
processes. Current methods for process design and optimization rely on the
modeling of the process and identification of its parameters by means of
expensive and time-consuming experiments, designed in a heuristic way.

Systematic iterative experiment design is expected to shorten the process
development time. The main idea is to build an initial process model using
a small number of experiments and then use this model to design new
experiments to gradually improve the model accuracy. Different modeling
techniques are applied: mechanistic modeling, metabolic modeling, hybrid
modeling by including fuzzy logic and neural networks as black-box or
gray-box modeling tools. The postdoc researcher will use experimental data
originating from a project on actinomycetes and will closely cooperate with
researchers involved in an on-going project on hybrid modeling of fed-batch
bioprocesses at the Control lab and at the Kluyver lab.

The candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in either control engineering,
applied mathematics or bioprocess engineering. Applications including a
Curriculum Vitae and a list of publications and realized projects should be
send to Dr. Robert Babuska.

             ABB Corporate Research Switzerland
             Automation and Control Systems Group

The ABB Research Centre in Baden-D=E4ttwil employs 160 engineers with
wide-ranging expertise. In close cooperation with various ABB business
areas the Centre is developing the foundations for the next generation
of ABB products.

Furthermore, we are looking to expand our "Automation and Control Systems"
team with two control engineers or information technologists with excellent
university degrees (degree and/or doctorate).

As the successful applicant you will be involved mainly with process control
technologies for power stations, distributed power generators and propulsion
systems. Your tasks will include the creation of physical models for these
processes, identification of model parameters, simulation of the process
models and the development of appropriate control systems. Additionally, the
"Automation and Control Team" is attaching increasing importance to process
optimisation and economic modelling. Typical projects within the team could
thus include estimation of the lifetime of power station components, the effect
of distributed power generators on the electricity grid, or risk analysis of
participation in energy markets.

A strong foundation in mathematics/physics coupled with an element of
pragmatism will enable you, the control engineer or information technologist,
to contribute your control technology knowledge to the automation of complex
processes. If you have experience with process control technology in power
stations, power semiconductors, propulsion systems, and if you have worked
with MATLAB/Simulink, all the better!

You will work independently, using a great deal of initiative, in a friendly
research and development environment. A young, multinational team is looking
forward to welcoming two, affable and communicative colleagues!

Interested? If so, send your application to the address below. Additional

                NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT
                ========================

Hierarchical Nonlinear Switching Control Design with Applications to
Propulsion Systems by
Alexander Leonessa, Florida Atlantic University
Wassim M. Haddad, Georgia Institute of Technology
VijaySekhar Chellaboina, University of Missouri-Columbia

Volume 255 in the Lecture Notes in Control and Information Sciences Series
ISBN : 1 85233 335 9

This book presents a general nonlinear control design methodology for
nonlinear uncertain dynamical systems. Specifically, a hierarchical
nonlinear switching control framework is developed that provides a rigorous
alternative to gain scheduling control for general nonlinear uncertain
systems. The proposed switching control design framework accounts for
actuator saturation constraints as well as system modeling uncertainty. The
efficacy of the control design approach is extensively demonstrated on
aeroengine propulsion systems. In particular, dynamic models for rotating
stall and surge in axial and centrifugal flow compression systems that lend
themselves to the application of nonlinear control design are developed and
the hierarchical switching control framework is then applied to control the
aerodynamic instabilities of rotating stall and surge.

For the researcher that is entering the field of hierarchical switching
robust control this book provides a plethora of new research directions.
Alternatively, for researchers already active in the field of hierarchical
control of hybrid systems, this book can be used as a reference to a
significant body of recent work. Furthermore, control practitioners involved
with nonlinear control design can immensely benefit from the novel nonlinear
stabilization techniques presented in the book.

Interval computation (or, more generally, guaranteed computation) is not
yet a part of the tools available to most researchers and engineers in
control and signal processing. On the other hand, control and signal
processing are not yet duly recognized as fruitful fields for applications
by most of the researchers working on interval computation. On a more
theoretical level, each group can benefit from importing the concepts,
techniques, and open problems from the other. The aim of this Special Issue
is to contribute to filling the gap between the two communities.

CALL FOR PAPERS

MULTIDIMENSIONAL SYSTEMS AND SIGNAL PROCESSING
An International Journal

Special Issue on
Applications of Groebner Bases in
Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing

Since Groebner bases play a similar role in multidimensional systems
and signal processing to Euclidean Division Algorithm in
one-dimensional systems and signal processing, there has been
a growing interest in applying Groebner bases in multidimensional
systems and signal processing over the past fifteen years.
The purpose of this special issue is to report on recent developments
in applications of Groebner bases in multidimensional systems and
signal processing. Papers dealing with applications of Groebner
bases in all areas of multidimensional systems and signal processing
are welcome, including but not limited to: multivariate polynomial
and matrix factorization schemes, multidimensional control systems,
multidimensional realization theory, multidimensional circuits and
systems, multidimensional signal analysis and processing,
multidimensional filters and filter banks, and image and video
signal processing.

                  EUROPEAN CONTROL CONFERENCE 2001

                             4-7 September, 2001
                      Seminario de Vilar, Porto, Portugal

The European Control Conference (ECC) is organized every two years,
with the aim to stimulate contacts between scientists active in the
area of Systems and Control. The first five conferences took place in
Grenoble (1991), Groningen (1993), Rome (1995), Brussels (1997), and
Karlsruhe (1999). The sixth ECC will be held in Porto, Portugal, in
2001. As for previous ECCs, the scope of the conference includes all
aspects of Systems and Control, ranging from fundamental research to
engineering applications. Topics of interest include multivariable and
nonlinear control, system modeling and identification, adaptive
control, optimal control, filtering, robotics, aerospace systems,
neural networks applied to control, and control of chemical processes.

As for the previous ECCs, we again plan to organize one or two invited
sessions on Chemical Process Control for ECC 2001. Papers are
solicited which address theoretical and application problems associated
with chemical process control. Topics may include, but are not limited
to, process monitoring and control, nonlinear and robust control,
modelling and identification, batch process control, discrete event and
hybrid systems, bioprocess control, and process control applications.

Similar to ACC customs, a final approval of the invited sessions can
only be given after the ECC Program Advisory Committee has met in early
2001.

If you are thinking about submitting a paper to this session(s) please
inform the session organizers about your tentative intent now, so that
we can direct any upcoming news related to this session to you.

DEADLINES:
