CALL FOR PAPERS
AUTOMATICA

Special Issue on
"NEURAL NETWORKS FOR FEEDBACK CONTROL"

Manuscript Due Date: 1 July 2000

The past decade has witnessed a growing body of
experimental work suggesting that artificial neural
networks can result in improved performance in complex
feedback control problems. This is borne out both in
simulation studies, as well as actual implementations of
neural controllers in industrial systems. More recently,
theoretical studies of neural network based control have
begun to appear in the literature, and proofs of
stability and convergence of algorithms have also been
reported. Since it is already well established that
neural networks are very adept at solving pattern
recognition problems, as well as at providing approximate
solutions to complex optimization problems, they appear
to be particularly suited for improving performance in
complex nonlinear systems in the presence of large
uncertainties. Since neural networks are merely
conveniently parametrized and easily implementable
families of nonlinear maps, neural network based control
is a natural extension of adaptive control theory to the
nonlinear domain.

In spite of notable advances in the field, the results on
neural network feedback control are not generally known
widely. In view of this the time is appropriate to bring
together the works of researchers doing analytic work in
the field, and to expose not only those working in neural
networks but also the wider Systems and Control Community
to these developments.

Therefore, Automatica is soliciting papers for a Special
Issue on "Neural Networks for Feedback Control" to be
published in July 2001. Accepted papers will present
approaches to the design of neurocontrollers that are
mathematically precisely formulated with repeatable
design algorithms. The editors will be:

ADPM'2000 will be the 4th event in a series of
biennial international conferences on hybrid
dynamic systems, i.e., systems with both
continuous and discrete dynamics. The conference
will provide a survey of the advances in this
field, including topics such as modeling,
analysis, verification, synthesis, simulation,
and the application of these methods in the
design of automation systems. The aim of the
ADPM'2000 is to bring together researchers and
practitioners with backgrounds in control,
electronics or computer science and to initiate
discussions on how concepts from these different
domains can be integrated to improve the
existing engineering methods for hybrid systems.

Review Process, Proceedings:
The Program Committee will review all extended
abstracts and special session proposals, and
decide on the acceptance and the form of
presentation. Full versions of the accepted
contributions will be published in the
proceedings available at the conference. Oral
presentations and posters will be allotted equal
space for the paper in the proceedings.
After the conference, a selection of the
presented papers will be published in a special
issue of the "European Journal on Automation"
(JESA), Hermes, Paris.

Technical Program:
The technical program will consist of invited
lectures by distinguished experts in hybrid
systems and reviewed papers and posters, either
as individual contributions or in special
sessions. Additionally, a tool exhibition is
planned to demonstrate the current state of
computer-aided engineering of hybrid systems.

Submissions:
Contributions are invited in all areas
pertaining to the engineering of hybrid dynamic
systems, e.g. modeling, specification, analysis,
verification, synthesis, simulation, and
implementation. Reports on industrial
applications of design or analysis methods for
hybrid systems are particularly encouraged. The
submitted material must be original, unpublished
and not being considered for publication
elsewhere.

(I) Individual Papers and Posters:
Authors are invited to submit an extended
abstract of 6 to 8 pages (font size 12 points,
1.5 line spacing), either a PS or PDF file or 4
hard copies. The organizers strongly encourage
electronic submission. The extended abstract
must contain each author's affiliation and
complete address (postal, e-mail, phone, fax)
and a short summary. Please identify the
corresponding author.

Submissions should also indicate the preferred
form of presentation, oral or poster. Poster
presentations are encouraged in particular for
reports on tool development. The conference
program will include poster sessions during
which no oral sessions will take place.

(II) Special Sessions:
Proposals for special sessions on particular
aspects of hybrid systems are invited. A special
session should consist of 4 to 6 papers in the
format described for individual contributions
and a one page abstract summarizing the aim and
content of the session, starting with a session
title, name and full address of the session
organizer, a list of the included papers, and
the preferred form of presentation (oral or
poster). Survey papers at the beginning of
special sessions are encouraged. They can
replace two regular contributions.

(III) Tool Exhibition:
Tool developers, academic or commercial, are
invited to present their programs in an
exhibition parallel to the conference. For this
purpose, a one page description of the tool has
to be submitted. Tool presentations are not
formally reviewed. Acceptance is subject to the
available space and relevance to the conference
topic.

Tool demos can also accompany the presentation
of an accepted scientific paper (preferably as a
poster). In this case, the authors should state
their intention to present software when
submitting the paper.

Workshop on Autonomous artificial systems exploring hostile environments
http://www.gmd.gr.jp/JRL/events.html

as part of the International NAISO Congress on Information Science Innovations
(ISI'2001) March 18th, 2001 at the American University of Dubai, U.A.E.

The depths of the oceans, the heats of volcanos, the cold of Antarctica, as well as
remote planets are getting more and more technically accessible. Still these areas
are too wide or too dangerous to be explored by humans directly. Thus we will be
requested to send artificial scouts from which we expect at least that they are
coming back or transmitting relevant information before they disintegrate. Furtheron
these creatures will be required to develop geographical abilities like for instance
navigating a second time exactly to a formerly discovered place or delivering spatio-
temporal models of various kinds. Still most of our exploring vehicles from today are
relying on the existence of permanent wireless connections, global positioning
systems, or local geographic maps. Under the ice of Antarctica and most other places
considered here, none of this infrastructure will be available. Therefore actual
exploration abilities are expected to be bundled with a real enhancement of autonomy.
This is what this workshop is about.

All presenters and audience submitting or exploiting fields like:
o On-line, life-long, or real-time adaptation/learning
o Spatio-temporal modeling (e.g. mapping, identification of dynamical systems)
o Dynamical systems
o Motion control
o Sensor data fusion
o Navigation
... working in applications addressing

o Exploration (deep sea, volcanoes, planets, ...)
o Search (Resources: manganese, oil, gas ... Lost & found: airplanes, ships)
o Rescue (earthquake/landslide/flood disasters)
o Monitoring (environmental, geological, biological, ...)

... or other forms of autonomy in natural environments
... or considering social aspects including

o Information about currently unknown areas
o Emergency technologies
o Environmental monitoring

are very welcome.

During the 5th Workshop on Discrete Event Systems (WODES2000)

(for more information see: http://systems.rug.ac.be/wodes2000/)

to be held in Ghent, Belgium, on August 21-23, 2000
there will be one or more sessions where developers of tools for DES
analysis and synthesis will have an opportunity to demonstrate their
software. The tools to be demonstrated could solve any of the problems
in the scope of the WODES2000 conference. In particular, but not
exclusively, there could be tools demonstrations for
- verification and control synthesis for discrete event and hybrid
systems;
- perturbation analysis and sensitivity analysis tools;
- (max,+) based tools and scheduling.

The proposed format for each tools session consists of brief plenary
presentations introducing the tools to be demonstrated,
followed by demonstrations in smaller groups. For each of the tools
there will also be the possibility of a brief (1 page) description to be
included in the conference proceedings.

Deadlines:
Declarations of intent to demonstrate a tool, with a brief description
of the tool, should preferably be submitted by March 10, 2000 to the
conference secretariat (wodes2000@systems.rug.ac.be). These submissions
should explain how the tool fits the scope of the WODES conference.
Tools demonstrators will be notified of the acceptance of their
submission by April 15.
Those who want to include a one page (non-commercial)
description of their tool in the conference proceedings
should submit this text in camera ready form by May 1st.
Later submissions will be considered, subject to availability of time
slots.
