FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MULTIMEDIA AND EXPO

               JULY 30 -- AUGUST 2, 2000, NEW YORK CITY

                http://://www.ieee-multimedia.poly.edu

International Conference on Multimedia & Expo 2000 is the first IEEE
multimedia conference that will take place in joint collaboration with
four IEEE societies. The same four IEEE societies that have recently
launched the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, namely the Circuits and
Systems Society, the Computer Society, the Signal Processing Society
and the Communications Society have again come together in making this
one-of-a-kind conference a reality.

The goal is to unify all IEEE as well as non-IEEE multimedia related
activities under the common umbrella of ICME 2000 -- the millennium
multimedia meeting. It is expected that this will become a yearly
event as the flagship Multimedia conference of the IEEE. New York
City (the Big Apple) is uniquely suited for this first-time event in
view of its large concentration of high tech Industries, first-rate
academic institutions and numerous small multimedia companies. The
intent is to blend the traditional IEEE conference framework into an
Expo by providing the industry an opportunity to showcase products.

Authors should submit a four-page manuscript in double-column format
including authors' names, affiliations and a short abstract. Only
electronic submission (in postscript format) will be accepted.
Electronic submission procedure will be made available at the
conference web site:

        http://www.ieee-multimedia.poly.edu

Topics covered include but are not limited to the following:
        * Signal processing for media integration
        * Components and technologies for multimedia systems
        * Human-machine interface and interaction
        * Multimedia databases and file systems
        * Multimedia communication and networking
        * System integration
        * Applications
        * STDS standards and related issues

Once accepted, the authors will be asked to prepare a four-page camera
ready paper to appear in the conference proceedings and CD-ROM
proceedings.

Proposals for special sessions and half-day or full-day tutorial courses
may be submitted to the respective chairs before the respective
deadlines. Visit the conference web site for further information.

1999 IEEE CONFERENCE ON DECISION AND CONTROL
WORKSHOP ON HYBRID SYSTEMS: MODELING, ANALYSIS AND CONTROL

Organized By: John Lygeros, George J. Pappas, and Shankar Sastry
    Crowne Plaza Hotel, 100 N. 1st Street,Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Monday,December 6th 1999

Workshop Abstract

Hybrid systems have recently attracted considerable attention from
researchers, primarily in the control community and in theoretical computer
science. In this one day workshop we propose to cover a wide range of
techniques that have been used for dealing with hybrid systems. The workshop
will be addressed primarily to control engineers, who are either interested
in doing research in the area and would like to become familiar with the
state of the art or are interested in applying hybrid systems techniques to
specific control problems. We will however, attempt to preserve a balance
between the control and computer science approaches. The topics covered can
be roughly divided into four categories: modeling, analysis, control and
applications. The morning session will be devoted to modeling and analysis.
Analysis techniques ranging from extensions of Lyapunov techniques to
computer aided verification, as well as the models on which these techniques
are based will be covered. The control of hybrid systems will be covered
next. A number of techniques that have been proposed for synthesizing
controllers for this class of systems will be presented. The workshop will
conclude with a session on simulation tools and their application in various
emerging domains, such as Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

                  WORKSHOP ON UNMANNED AIR VEHICLES:
                  COORDINATION, SENSING, AND CONTROL

                     (Monday, December 6th, 1999)

Workshop Abstract:

Unmanned air vehicles are being used more and more in a number of
civilian and military applications, e.g., remote monitoring of
traffic, search and rescue operations, surveillance, etc. This has
spanned considerable interest in the control community, mainly due to
the fact that the design of UAVs brings to light research questions
falling in some of the most exciting "new directions" for automatic
control. Examples of these are multi-agent coordination, probabilistic
reasoning in control, vision in the feedback loop, sensor fusion,
hybrid systems, biologically inspired systems, etc. Adding to this,
many UAVs make use of new sensing and control technologies, such as
Infrared Sensors (IR), Global Positioning System (GPS), Micro Electro
Mechanical Systems (MEMS), etc.

In a one day workshop we propose to cover a wide range of questions
arising in the design of UAVs. This will be done systematically,
starting with high-level mission planning and going all the way to
single vehicle, integrated hardware/software design. The first set of
talks address the coordination of fleets of UAVs. The specific
questions covered include multi-agent pursuit-evasion games, conflict
resolution, and hierarchical architectures for control and
communication. A second set of talks concentrates navigation and
sensing. In particular on three-dimensional obstacle avoidance, the
landing of UAVs on fixed or moving platforms, and the fusion of sensor
data that includes GPS, INS, and vision measurements. The last set of
talks focus on the design, modeling, and control of single
UAVs. Special emphasis is put on the nonlinear nature of the systems.
Biologically inspired design and hardware/software integration are
also considered.

         AIPS 2000 Workshop on

         PLANNING AND SCHEDULING IN
         CONTROL OF DYNAMIC ENTERPRISES

Breckenridge, CO, USA, April 14, 2000

The proposed workshop will explore the issues and opportunities at the
interface of Planning/Scheduling and Enterprise-level Control.

We observe a rapidly growing interest in exploring opportunities for
convergence of Planning/Scheduling and the recent advances in supervisory
control of discrete and hybrid systems. An intriguing evidence of this
interest is the recent initiation of large-scale programs focused on a
broader issue of control of enterprise operations, as opposed to generation
of plan/schedule for an enterprise. The message is How do we do
planning/scheduling within the overall process of continuous control of
complex, large-scale dynamic enterprises?

This workshop, although not excluding such a research, will strive to give
greater weight to the planning and control of an enterprise a large-scale
system with broadly distributed and potentially conflicting goals, resources
and constraints, with multiple semi-autonomous participants of both human
and a rtificial nature (e.g., large military operations, financial/trading
institutions, logistics systems, manufacturing plants, power grids).

Specific Topics of Interest
Integrated planning, scheduling and control algorithms
Control and planning of Discrete-Event Systems Stability and
dynamic phenomena in dynamic replanning, rescheduling and
execution Adaptive control vs. learning in planning
Game-theoretic control and adversarial planning Mixed-initiative
planning/scheduling and role of humans on the control loop
Distributed control vs. multi-agent planning Monitoring and
state estimation in control and planning

This workshop is intended to bring together theoretical and applied
researchers from both the Planning and Scheduling community and the Control
Theory community.

Format of the Workshop

The workshop will combine an invited talk, presentations of papers and a
poster session which may also include demonstrations. Thus, the workshop
invites any of the following, or a combination thereof:

      a full-length paper
      a poster presentation
a demonstration of a software system.

Submission Guidelines

Papers should not exceed 8 pages in length and must use AAAI macros and
templates and AAAI instructions. Researchers wishing to participate in the
poster and/or demonstration session can submit either a 2-page position paper
or a full-length paper corresponding to their posters or demonstration. The
organizing committee will determine the acceptance of the papers fr either a
talk of about 20 minutes or a poster presentation. All full-length papers
accepted for either a talk or the poster session will be included the workshop
publication. Submit all papers as uncompressed PostScript files via e-mail
