-------------------------
The rapid evolution of computing, communication, and sensor technologies
has brought about the proliferation of 'new' dynamic systems, mostly
technological and often highly complex. Examples are all around us:
computer and communication networks; automated manufacturing systems; air
traffic control systems; and distributed software systems. The 'activity' in
these systems is governed by operational rules designed by humans; their
dynamics are therefore characterized by asynchronous occurrences of discrete
events. These features lend themselves to the term discrete event system
for this class of dynamic systems.
A substantial portion of this book is a revised version of Discrete Event
Systems: Modeling and Performance Analysis (1993), written by the first
author, which received the 1999 HAROLD CHESTNUT PRIZE, awarded by the
International Federation of Automatic Control for best control engineering
textbook. This new expanded book is intended to be a comprehensive
introduction to the field of discrete event systems, emphasizing breadth of
coverage and accessibility of the material to readers with possibly
different backgrounds. Its key feature is the emphasis placed on a unified
modeling framework that transcends specific application areas and allows
linking of the following topics in a coherent manner: language and automata
theory, supervisory control, Petri net theory, (max,+) algebra, Markov
chains and queuing theory, discrete-event simulation, perturbation analysis,
and concurrent estimation techniques. Until now, these topics had been
treated in separate books or in research literature only.
Introduction to Discrete Event Systems is written as a textbook for courses
at the senior undergraduate level or the first-year graduate level. It will
be of interest to students in a variety of disciplines where the study of
discrete event systems is relevant: control, communications, computer
engineering, computer science, manufacturing engineering, operations
research, and industrial engineering.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on Neural Networks for Feedback Control
The past decade has witnessed a growing body of experimental work suggesting
that artificial neural networks can result in improved performance in
complex
feedback control problems. This is borne out both in simulation studies, as
well as actual implementations of neural controllers in industrial systems.
More recently, theoretical studies of neural network based control have
begun
to appear in the literature, and proofs of stability and convergence of
algorithms have also been reported. Since it is already well established
that neural networks are very adept at solving pattern recognition problems,
as well as at providing approximate solutions to complex optimization
problems, they appear to be particularly suited for improving performance
in complex nonlinear systems in the presence of large uncertainties. Since
neural networks are merely conveniently parametrized and easily
implementable
families of nonlinear maps, neural network based control is a natural
extension of adaptive control theory to the nonlinear domain.
In spite of notable advances in the field, the results on neural network
feedback control are not generally known widely. In view of this the time
is appropriate to bring together the works of researchers doing analytic
work in the field, and to expose not only those working in neural networks
but also the wider Systems and Control Community to these developments.
Therefore, Automatica is soliciting papers for a Special Issue on "Neural
Networks for Feedback Control" to be published in July 2001. Accepted papers
will present approaches to the design of neurocontrollers that are
mathematically precisely formulated with repeatable design algorithms.

Announcement : A New Journal Starts in 1999
The Asian Journal of Control, an ACPA (Asian Control Professor
Association) affiliated journal, is the first international journal
originating from the Asian Pacific region and being recognized by the
major body of control researchers in this region. The Asian Journal of
Control publishes quarterly high-quality papers on original theoretical
and experimental research and development in the areas of control, involving
all facets of control theory and its application. Functionally, this journal
not only provides a forum where control researchers and practitioners can
exchange their knowledge and experiences in the control areas, but also
serves as an educational means for students and any others whoever like
to learn some topics in the same technical area. It is strongly believed
this journal will become an important communication channel for the
control community in the Asian Pacific region and the outside international
community.
The scope of the journal is extensive. Topics include: the theory and
design of control systems and components, encompassing robust and distributed
control using geometric, optimal, stochastic and nonlinear methods, game
theory and state estimation; adaptive control, including robotics, neural
networks, learning, parameter estimation and system fault detection;
additional topics including artificial intelligence, fuzzy and expert
systems, hierarchical and man-machine systems, all parts of systems
engineering which consider the reliability of components and systems;
data processing; mechatronics; and computers for computer-aided design,
manufacturing, and control of various industrial processes, space vehicles
and aircraft, ships, traffic, biomedical systems, national economies, power
systems, agriculture and natural resources.
Submitted articles may be Survey Papers (extensive reviews of
established or emerging research topics or application areas), Papers
(detailed discussion involving new research, applications or development),
or Brief Papers (brief presentations of new technical concepts and
developments). The journal also publishes the Special Issues on subjects
of increasing importance.

"Applications to Multidimensional Signal Processing" - M. Domanski, Poland
The past two to three decades, in particular, have seen a continually
growing interest in so-called two-dimensional (2D) or, more generally,
multidimensional (nD) systems. This is clearly related to the wide
variety of applications of both practical and/or theoretical interest.
The key unique feature of an nD system is that the plant or process
dynamics (input, output and state variables) depend on more than one
indeterminate and hence information is propagated in many independent
directions. Many physical processes have a clear nD structure.
Also the nD approach is frequently used as an analysis tool to assist,
or in some cases enable, the solution of a wide variety of problems.
Contributed papers and invited sessions for NDS-98 are hereby solicited
in all areas mathematics of nD systems as well as emerging fields in
engineering with potential impact in circuits, automatic control
systems and signal processing.
NDS 2000 strives:
to bring together people in the control, the circuits, the signal
processing, the computer societies and, last but not least, application
oriented mathematicians and to offer a forum for interaction.
to give an overview of some key 2D (nD) systems theory topics,
including current progress/results, open research problems, and the
links with general areas such as control, circuit analysis/design and
signal processing.
to illustrate that existing theory offers strong analytical tools for
solving key problems in numerous industrial applications areas.

2000-15th IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control
"ISIC 2000"
July 17-19, 2000
Unversity of Patras, Rio, Greece
jointly with MED 2000
Scope
Intelligent control refers to a collection of analysis and synthesis
methods dealing with systems for which traditional control methods are
inadequate. The need for intelligent'' control is witnessed by the
emergence of engineering systems exhibiting an increasingly greater
degree of complexity and sophistication. These systems are found in
applications such as plant process control, traffic control,
distributed simulation, military command and control, communication
networks, power generation and distribution, aircraft and robot design,
automotive control, and path planning. The complexity and sophistication
of these systems can be dealt with, in part, due to the great
technological advances in communication and computing which make it
possible to build large-scale distributed systems that satisfy very
complex behavioral specifications. The main challenge to control systems
technology comes from the fact that even with the currently available
tools it is difficult to specify behaviors of these complex systems
completely, i.e., many aspects cannot be anticipated at either the
specification or the design time of a controller. These kinds of control
systems are not amenable to the tools used by
traditional control systems engineering. A variety of alternative
methods have emerged to deal with such systems. This collection of
methods is often referred to as Intelligent Control since the resulting
control systems can deal with unanticipated changes in the behavior of
the controlled system, i.e., they appear to emulate certain
characteristics of intelligent biological systems. Intelligent
control is a dynamic field in which methods, initially perceived as
novel, become accepted as "conventional'' when the utility of these
methods is established. Overall, however, novel control methods that
address issues of complexity and learning, or methods that reduce or can
deal with modeling uncertainty, increase system autonomy, or methods
that facilitate the coordination between multiple controllers and the
integration of control and supervision can all be thought of as
intelligent control methods
