                           The Richard C. DiPrima Prize


     The DiPrima Prize

     SIAM will present the award at the 2000 SIAM Annual Meeting in Rio
     Grande, Puerto Rico, July 10-14.  The award honors the memory of
     Richard C. DiPrima, long-time Chair of the Department of Mathematical
     Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and former President and
     energetic supporter of SIAM.  The award will be based on an
     outstanding doctoral dissertation in applied mathematics.


     Eligibility

     The award, based on Ph.D. research in applied mathematics (defined as
     those topics covered in SIAM journals or series) is made to a young
     scientist.  The Ph.D. thesis and all other Ph.D. requirements should
     have been completed in the time period from July 1, 1997 to June 30,
     1999.  The Ph.D. degree must be awarded by December 31, 1999.


     Description of the Award

     The award will consist of a certificate and a cash prize of $1,000.
     The SIAM President will notify the recipient of the award in advance
     of the award date and invite the recipient to attend the annual
     meeting to receive the award.  Travel expenses will be paid by the
     prize fund.

Job Openings at UTRC in Controls

The Dynamic Systems and Control Group at the United Technologies Research
Center invites qualified individuals to apply for an open position.

United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) is an internationally recognized
R&D organization that conducts research across a broad range of technology
areas in support of operating units of United Technologies Corporation
(UTC). The Dynamic Systems and Control Group is responsible for research
activities at UTC on dynamic systems and control. The activities include
control algorithm design and analysis, control implementations, and reduced
order modeling and analysis of dynamic systems. The activities are conducted
in order to advance the state-of-the-art in one or more UTC divisions: Pratt
& Whitney (aircraft engines), Sikorsky (helicopters), Otis (elevators),
Carrier (heating and air conditioning) and Hamilton-Sundstrand (Aerospace

Expertise is desired in control system design, analysis and implementation.
The applications currently studied involve the control of fluid flow systems
and combustion processes to the control of flight systems. Specific duties
will involve the application of robust control theory, the development of
system level models and the analysis of actuation strategies in terms of
requirements and fundamental limits, and the development of multivariable
and optimization based control design methodologies and subsequent
simulation and hardware implementation.

 Each individual in the group participates in one to three different
projects, all contributing to the solution of practical engineering
problems. The minimum requirement is a strong background in control theory,
mathematics and modeling of dynamic systems. The typical candidate would
have a master's degree in control engineering or a relevant engineering
discipline plus three years of professional experience developing and
implementing control systems. A Ph.D is very desirable. Preference will be
given to candidates with expertise in: 1) control system implementation
including hardware experience and measurement based modeling (system
identification), 2) optimization techniques and optimal control methods
particularly as used in model predictive control, 3) analysis and synthesis
of nonlinear control strategies for large scale systems, 4) aerospace
applications including modeling and hardware (actuation) experience, and 5)
demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

      ACADEMIC RESEARCH POSITION  in  AUTOMATIC CONTROL
      Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL)

The Institut d'Automatique of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
in Lausanne (EPFL) invites applications for a senior post-doctoral
position  in Automatic Control.

The position is ideal for an outstanding control engineer who can
interact with both graduate students and industry. The expected length
of stay at the EPFL is in the order of 6 years, i.e. more than a "normal
post-doctoral" position. Thus, the position is ideally suited for a
young control engineer interested in building up the broad and
comprehensive research record necessary for a subsequent career move.
The duties will include the following elements:

 - Research related to the institute's activities (see list below).
 - Supervision of doctoral candidates.
 - Secure funding from national agencies and European research programs.
 - Involvement in collaborative work with industrial partners.

The position is available starting Fall 1999 or later. Though knowledge
of French is not a requirement, it is expected that the successful
candidate quickly develops a working knowledge of that language. A
highly-competitive salary is offered, the amount of which will depend
upon the experience of the candidate.

The Institut d'Automatique is a multidisciplinary teaching and research
unit that includes two professors, a senior lecturer, 2-3 research
associates, about 15 doctoral candidates as well as technical and
administrative supporting staff. Research and computing facilities are
of the highest standard. The institute has
presently four areas of methodological research:

 - Identification (for control) and robust linear control
 - Analysis and control of nonlinear systems
 - Optimal control of terminal-cost problems (dynamic optimization)
 - Real-time control and telepresence (remote manipulation)

The developed methodologies are applied to the two large fields of
motion control (e.g. friction modeling and compensation, repetitive
control) and process control (e.g. on-line monitoring and optimization

Lausanne is a French-speaking, mid-sized city nicely located on the
northern shore of Lake Geneva. It offers a large variety of cultural and

   PhD position available at the Delft University of Technology
        research topic: fault detection and diagnosis



At the Control Laboratory of the Faculty of Information Technology and Systems
at the TU Delft, the Netherlands, a project called "Neuro-Fuzzy Modeling in
Model Based Fault Detection, Isolation, and Controller Reconfiguration" has
recently been started. This project is funded by the Dutch Technology
Foundation (STW) and it carried out in cooperation with the University of
Twente and a number of Dutch companies. For this project, the Control
Laboratory is looking for a PhD student who will do research in fault
detection and diagnosis.

Brief description
The increasing complexity of industrial processes requires new advanced
approaches to fault detection and diagnosis. Decreasing costs of sensors and
data acquisition devices make large amounts of process data available, but, at
the same time, the complexity of fault isolation methods increases. The PhD
student will do research in fault detection and diagnosis of complex processes
using advanced methods including fuzzy logic and neural networks.

Salary
The position is for four years. The salary starts at DFL 3911 in the first
year and increases to DFL 4514 in the fourth year (EUR 1778 to 2052).

two goals: first, to give a thorough grounding in linear state-space modeling
and, second, to give a mature understanding of some applications of the
required background, which often has been learned quickly and used little.
Solutions to odd-numbered problems are included.

The required background is working knowledge of linear algebra, differential
equations, Laplace transforms, and Z transforms. The new material is
supplemented with many examples, some of which extend the theory. There is
also a good dose of proofs, to promote logical thinking and to show the
elegance of some of the techniques, but hints about practicalities and
floating-point numerical computation are also given.

      This thesis is concerned with the application and development
      of discrete event systems modeling to the problem of the control
      of sensory perception. The subject and approach taken by the
      candidate is indeed novel and differs substantially in philosophy and
      intent from previous approaches to this problem. The work is a
      significant contribution to the general area of robotics and sensory
      control.

      The notion of discrete sensing states and transitions between states
      is what distinguishes the approach taken in this thesis from the more
      continuous-time, information-theoretic methods. The thesis contains
      significant advances in the state of the art in on-line monitoring of
      sensor-based robot actions. The emphasis is on monitoring of contact
      changes and estimation of the contact situation after the transitions,
      during repetitive execution.

modelling of nonlinear systems and it seems an appropriate time to consider

MTNS-2000 will be the 14th edition of the International Symposium on
Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems. It will be held in Perpignan,
France, from June 19 to 23, 2000. The program will include plenary lectures,
minicourses, contributed papers and invited sessions.

CD will be given to all registered participants at the beginning of the

                         IFAC Workshop on

     Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Methods for Nonlinear Control

                         March 16-18, 2000

SCOPE:

The workshop will present new approaches to nonlinear control that
exploit mechanical and electromechanical system structure, in particular,
Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structure.  New technologies have created
engineering problems where successful controller designs must account
for nonlinear effects, yet existing theory for general nonlinear systems
often proves insufficient.  This workshop will cover new developments in
nonlinear control theory, design methods and applications where
techniques have been effectively tailored to exploit mechanical and
electromechanical system structure.  The workshop program will include
contributed papers as well as a number of invited papers by leading
international authorities.  In-depth discussions by all participants on
basic problems and future directions will be encouraged.

Topics to be covered include among others:

- control of mechanical, electromechanical and electrical systems
- control of autonomous vehicles
- Hamiltonian and Lagrangian control systems
- use of symplectic, Poisson and Dirac structures in control
- role of symmetry, reduction and integrability in control

Scope:
The restructuring of manufacturing industries caused by rapidly changing
markets and rapid introduction of new products has created a growing need for
highly responsive manufacturing systems,  The technologies that are key to
minimum "time for market" and a highly diversified customer base are those of
flexible and reconfigurable automation.  In order to strengthen the science and
engineering of flexible and reconfigurable manufacturing, it is essential that
researchers and engineers communicate and coordinate their work.  The purpose
of this biennial symposium, following in the footsteps of seven previous ones,
is to promote research activities in various areas of manufacturing systems
automation by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, presentation of
technological achievements, and discussion of future directions.
The topics of interest include, but are not limited to: mechatronics, robotics,
autonomously guided vehicles, sensing and signal processing, manufacturing
process control, planning and scheduling for manufacturing, flexible
manufacturing systems, principles of agility in manufacturing, communication
networks and software systems, reliability, reconfigurable manufacturing
systems, malfunction analysis, concurrent engineering, evolutionary
computation, and advanced computer integrated manufacturing.

Paper Submission:
All papers should be written in English.  Both long and short papers will be
considered.  A long paper is defined as less than 6-8 proceedings pages and a
short paper is less than 4 pages (about 1000 words per page).  Long papers are
reviewed as full manuscripts including abstract and keywords.  Short papers are
screened by a 600-1000 words summary with keywords.  Papers should be submitted

      NUMERICAL CONTROL SOFTWARE: a useful tool in industry

This workshop organized by the European Numerics in Control thematic Network
(NICONET) aims to bring together engineers, mathematicians, computer
scientists and practitioners from industry and academia dealing with
numerical software in systems and control and their implementation and use
in industrial practice.

Recent advances on the use of numerical software libraries especially
designed for solving systems and control engineering problems in a
numerically reliable and efficient way will be discussed. The current
status of the freely available SLICOT library will be extensively discussed,
as well as industrial control applications and future extensions, comprising
parallel versions and practically oriented  benchmarks. SLICOT is a valuable
tool for the reliable solution of many control problems, and for large-
scale, computer-intensive control problems and real-time applications,
SLICOT can lead to significant performance improvements.

Workshop Program:
The morning session consists of a tutorial training course including
demos of the newly developed SLICOT toolboxes which enable the use of
SLICOT routines within the user-friendly CACSD packages MATLAB and  Scilab.
In the afternoon, plenary talks are scheduled describing the use of
numerical control software in diverse industrial control applications. In
addition, a poster session of contributed papers illustrates new
developments in control software and their performance in engineering
practice and industrial applications.

                           ADCHEM 2000
  International Symposium on Advanced Control of of Chemical Processes
                        June 14-16, 2000
                           Pisa, Italy


The ADCHEM 2000 meeting will be held on June 14-16, 2000 in Pisa, Italy.
Organized under the auspices of IFAC. ADCHEM (International Symposium on
Advanced Control of Chemical Processes) is a continuing series of
international meetings held most recently in Banff, Canada (1997), Kyoto,
Japan (1994) and Toulouse, France (1991).  These meetings have
traditionally focused on advances in methods for control and identification
and are part of a three year rotation of IFAC meetings in process control,
which also include DYCOPS (Corfu, 1998) and the IFAC World Congress
(Beijing, 1999).

For the upcoming ADCHEM meeting, contributed papers are now being
considered in the following areas:

1.  Modeling and Simulation - these can include first principle models,
data driven models, and model reduction for control and optimization

2.  Model Based Control - including linear and nonlinear MPC,
linearizations based geometric concepts, etc.

3.  Realtime Optimization - including optimization of steady state and
dynamic models, integration with control systems

4.  Process and Control Monitoring - including PCA and other statistical
techniques, auditing of sensors, etc.

5.  Process Identification - including estimation and filtering of linear
and nonlinear systems.

6.  Process Control Applications and Plantwide Control - including the
control of environmental systems, petroleum refineries, etc.

Proposals for invited and tutorial sessions are also being entertained and

following IFAC guidelines with a six page limit.  These can be made

The meeting is being organized by a National Organizing Committee chaired

Conference Fees: 500 Euro (today's exchange rate: 1 Euro = 1.015

Local Accommodations: The conference will take place at the Congress Palace
and participants will find accomodation in nearby hotels.  Most hotels are
located within walking distance (15 minutes) from the conference place;

Chairman or the Symposium Organizer. Invited sessions should preferrably
start with a tutorial paper. The registration fee of the session organizer
will be waived, if at least 4 authors of invited papers register to the
conference.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS
Poster presentations are encouraged for people who wish to receive peer
feedback and practical examples of applied research are particularly welcome.
Poster sessions will allow the presentation and discussion of respective
papers, which will also be included in the conference proceedings.

WORKSHOPS, TUTORIALS AND OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS
Proposals should be submitted as soon as possible to the Symposium Chairman
or the Symposium Organizer.

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
Prospective authors are requested to either send a draft paper (maximum

Committee. All submissions must be written in English, starting with a
succinct statement of the problem, the results achieved, their significance

Optimization has been used as a basis for control for decades.
Constraint Programming has been applied to many domains such as
configuration design, planning, and scheduling. However, up to now,
theories and algorithms for constraint programming and control
have been developed mostly in separate communities: while research
in constraint programming has focused more on languages and
constraint satisfaction techniques in discrete domains, research
in control has focused more on numerical solutions to linear and
non-linear constrained optimization problems. The purpose of this
workshop is to bring researchers from both sides together and build
synergy between the two communities.

Both theory and applications are of interest to this workshop.
The workshop invites submissions related to all aspects of constraints
in control:

>From a theoretical point of view, relevant topics include,
but are not limited to:
  * on-line (or any-time, sequential, incremental, reactive)
    constraint satisfaction or constraint-based optimization
    techniques,
  * distributed, embedded or real-time constraint representation
    and constraint satisfaction,
  * discrete-continuous hybrid (mixed) or software-hardware
    integrated constraint satisfaction techniques,
  * hierarchical or modular constraint representation and solving.


>From an applications point of view, relevant topics include,
but are not limited to:
  * constraint-based modeling and control,
  * constraint-based software control systems,
  * constraint programming in control design,
  * applications to real systems are very welcome:
    - robots and automation,
    - real-time process control,
    - space and automobile applications,
    - on-line planning and scheduling.


The key new issues brought to the workshop are:
      *on-line (vs. off-line),
      *distributed (vs. centralized), and
      *real-time embedded (vs. resource unlimited).

We plan a one-day workshop. The primary forum will be
scheduled presentations. A number of invited papers/talks and panel
discussions may also be extended, for highlighting this
interdisciplinary research area. Suggestions for speakers and
panel discussions are welcome.

PAPER SUBMISSIONS:

Submission deadline is August 30, 1999. Submitted papers shall be
written in English with 12pt font and approximately 6 A4 size pages in
length. Papers shall be in PDF, Postscript or Microsoft Word format.
The proceedings will be collected and published at least on the Web.

AIMS AND SCOPE
The purpose of the Symposium is to bring together researchers and practitioners

from industry, government and academia to present and discuss the latest
developments in all aspects of enterprise control. The Symposium is sponsored
by
the Joint Force Air Component Commander (JFACC) Program in the Information
Systems Office (ISO) of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
(DARPA).

The Symposium seeks papers that (a) describe the results of original research
on
the topics of interest, (b) provide broad reviews of the state-of-the-art, and
(c) propose and advocate new research directions. Also invited are papers that
describe significant practical experiences with current enterprise control
systems: complex dynamic phenomena, non-obvious successes and failures,
requirements and unmet needs. Note that the security classification of this
Symposium is unclassified.

The modern enterprise is a large-scale dynamic system with broadly distributed
and potentially conflicting goals, resources and constraints, with multiple
semi-autonomous participants of both human and artificial nature (e.g., large
military operations, financial/trading institutions, logistics systems,
manufacturing plants, power grids). The increasing capabilities of technology
to
collect, automatically generate, and disseminate information offer the
possibility for large-scale enterprises to be more responsive to change.
Enterprise plans and orders quickly become obsolete as new information about
the
current situation becomes available. The challenge is to use real-time
information to re-direct enterprise operations effectively. Such systems and
challenges define the scope of the Symposium.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
Submissions are invited in all areas pertaining to the design, analysis and
implementation of enterprise control systems. Topics include but are not
limited
to:

* modeling and representations of large-scale enterprise control systems
* reasoning at multiple levels of abstraction
* computer-aided synthesis and design
* simulation and verification
* controllability and stability
* integrated planning/scheduling/control
* adaptive control in large-scale enterprises
* game-theoretic control and adversarial control
* role and impact of humans on the control loop
* distributed and multi-agent control architectures

Submissions
Researchers are invited to submit an extended abstract as a postscript, MS
Word,
or pdf file via e-mail to jfacc_program@darpa.mil. The abstract should not
exceed 10 double-spaced pages or 4 pages in two-column format. The first page
should include the title of the paper, each author's name and affiliation,
complete contact information for the corresponding author (postal and e-mail
addresses, telephone and fax numbers), and a one-paragraph summary of the
contribution. Full versions of the accepted submissions will be published in
the
proceedings following the Symposium. Full versions of the papers must conform
to
the standards of IEEE Computer Society Press guidelines for conference
proceedings (see http://computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm). It is an intent of
this Symposium to encourage interactions of practitioners and theoreticians,
and
to make the innovative research more accessible to the enterprise leaders and
decision-makers. To this end, all theoretical papers should contain a section
that illustrates the key idea and significance of the paper in qualitative
terms
and examples, and does not require an extensive control-theoretic background.
