Goals :
The aims of this school are:
-to review the so-called classical sliding mode techniques", i.e. the
sliding mode of order one, and to point its theoretical and practical
frameworks ;
-to introduce some new techniques that allow to solve the chattering issue;
-to constitute a starting point for new studies on sliding mode control for
various research teams;
-to show to the industrial audience the potentiality of these techniques and
their recent developments.
Potential audience:
As shown by the above goals, this school concerns Ph. D. students or
researchers working on similar fields but also academics and research
engineers who want to discover new robust and simple control.

HOT MILL CONTROL AND TECHNOLOGY : 2nd INTERNATIONAL TRAINING COURSE
September 6th-10th, 1999
Last year the Industrial Control Centre (ICC) and the Advanced Control
Technology (ACT) Club successfully held the inaugural International Training
Course on Hot Mill Control and Technology which attracted 29 delegates from
15 countries. The delegates companies included Bethlehem Steel, Danieli
United, Sollac Unisor, Aceralia Corp, Hoogovens, Cockerill Sambre, Dofasco,
Iscor Steel, Hylsamex, British Steel, Kvaerner Metals, Alcan, Logan
Aluminium and Columbus Stainless. The course this year has some new subjects
and some of the popular areas from the first course have been
extended.
The course is intended to introduce rolling mill engineers to control
engineering, particularly where it relates to product quality and throughput
improvements. The course covers a one-week period and begins with an
introduction to rolling mill operations and the models, which are needed to
understand them. Methods of simulating such systems to analyse performance,
for training and for management information systems will also be
described. The focus of the course is on control engineering, starting with
the required background theory. The emphasis is then on the different
control systems on the mill, both on typical current plants and on new
developments.
The major control loops on hot strip mills are analysed, such as the strip
thickness and flatness controls. Both regulating loops and supervisory
controls will be considered, and the potential of advances in condition
monitoring systems and fault tolerant/reliable control are described. Most
currently prevailing control loops are of a classical type: a combination of
basic PID-feedback, feedforward, cascade loops and logic. The potential
benefits of using modern, multivariable or robust control will be discussed,
although for this course the aim is to introduce the central ideas of more
advanced control intuitively.
Many leading international companies in metals processing contribute
substantially to the course. They will introduce new equipment-based
technology as well as new software tools that simplify performance analysis
and improvement.
The main target audience for the course are electrical and mechanical
engineers working in steel and aluminium mills, and those in companies and
other organisations supplying control systems or training to the metals
processing industry. The course is also relevant to design engineers wishing
to refresh their control engineering knowledge, and managers who require an
up-to-date overview of quality improving
technology.

Sciences there is a Ph.D. position available.
Multi Phase Adaptive Control Systems
This project is supervised by dr. J.W. Polderman (contact
person) and prof. dr. ir. H. Kwakernaak.
Adaptive control systems are capable of adapting themselves
automatically to changing conditions. Conditions that
influence the dynamic behavior of the system could change
abruptly or gradually in time. A well-known example of an
adaptive system is the self-learning thermostat of a domestic
heating system.
In this project emphasis is on modelling, design and
mathematical analysis of the so called multi phase dual
adaptive control systems. In this type of control systems,
adaptation evolves in phases. An initial phase in which
emphasis is on identification, an intermediate phase where
identification and control are treated equally and a
final phases in which identification is carried for the sake
of control only. The aim is to develop quantitative parameters
on the basis of which it can be decided in which phase the
adaptive control system should operate.
The project is an integrated part of an established
cooperation with the Department of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering of the University of Melbourne (Australia).
General information
The PhD student will do his or her work under the auspices of the
Dutch Institute of Systems and Control (DISC), scientific
director prof. dr. ir. H. Kwakernaak, and the Research
Institute Cornelis Drebbel, scientific director prof. dr. ir.

Unique in its alternative approach to the study on nonlinear control
systems, this book is devoted to use of algebraic methods which are
intrinsically linear, rather than the more common referal to
differential geometric methods. This allows the exposition to remain
simple form a mathematical point of view, and accessible for
everyone who has a good understanding of linear control theory.

Robust Aeroservoelastic Stability Analysis: Flight Test Applications
by Rick Lind and Marty Brenner
NASA Dryden Flight Research Center
Springer-Verlag Series: Advances in Industrial Control
http://www.springer.co.uk
This volume reports the application of the structured singular value to
aeroelastic and aeroservoelastic aerospace problems. Flight data is
incorporated directly into the analysis to account for model uncertainty. A
complete and systematic presentation is made of this area so the monograph
is self-contained. A strong motivation for the work was the cost saving
obtained from reducing flight test necessary to safely expand flight
envelopes.
This monograph is recommended for all specialists in the aerospace sector
and also for the general reader seeking an insight into the practical
application of robust stability analysis concepts.

Book Announcement
``Stochastic Controls: Hamiltonian Systems and HJB Equations"
By
Jiongmin Yong and Xun Yu Zhou
Published by Springer-Verlag, New York
(Applications of Mathematics #43)
438 pages, ISBN 0387987231
Released in July 1999, Available now for ordering at www.amazon.com
This book gives a self-contained, coherent, and systematic exposition of the
major optimal control theory for continuous-time stochastic diffusion
processes, including the Pontryagin type maximum principle (MP) featuring
second-order adjoint equations, the Bellman dynamic programming (DP) method
via viscosity solution theory, and the Kalman linear-quadratic (LQ) models
with indefinite cost functionals. A major feature of the controlled systems
under consideration is that the controls enter into both the drifts and the
diffusions, making it fundamentally different from the deterministic
systems. The main theme of the book is on establishing relations between MP
and DP, or essentially those between Hamiltonian systems and
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations. Moreover, analogies of the
relations in mechanics, partial differential equations, stochastic analysis,
economics and finance are presented. The final part of the book provides a
most updated account of backward stochastic differential equations, which
stem from the stochastic MP and have important applications in mathematical
finance among others. In addition to mathematical rigor, this book
emphasizes intuitions and applications of the theory, complemented by a
large number of illustrative examples.
This book can be used as a text book for graduate students majoring in
(stochastic) controls and applications. Some knowledge in measure theory and
real analysis will be helpful. It can also serve as a reference for
researchers in applied probability, control theory, operations research,
physics, economics and finance.

The Asian Journal of Control, an ACPA (Asian Control Professor
Association) affiliated journal, is the first international journal
originating from the Asian Pacific region and being recognized by the major
body of control researchers in this region. The Asian Journal of Control
publishes quarterly high-quality papers on original theoretical and
experimental research and development in the areas of control, involving all
facets of control theory and its application. Functionally, this journal not
only provides a forum where control researchers and practitioners can
exchange their knowledge and experiences in the control areas, but also
serves as an educational means for students and any others whoever like to
learn some topics in the same technical area. It is strongly believed this
journal will become an important communication channel for the control
community in the Asian Pacific region and the outside international
community.
The scope of the journal is extensive. Topics include: the theory and
design of control systems and components, encompassing robust and
distributed control using geometric, optimal, stochastic and nonlinear
methods, game theory and state estimation; adaptive control, including
robotics, neural networks, learning, parameter estimation and system fault
detection; additional topics including artificial intelligence, fuzzy and
expert systems, hierarchical and man-machine systems, all parts of systems
engineering which consider the reliability of components and systems; data
processing; mechatronics; and computers for computer-aided design,
manufacturing, and control of various industrial processes, space vehicles
and aircraft, ships, traffic, biomedical systems, national economies, power
systems, agriculture and natural resources.
Submitted articles may be Survey Papers (extensive reviews of
established or emerging research topics or application areas), Papers
(detailed discussion involving new research, applications or development),
or Brief Papers (brief presentations of new technical concepts and
developments). The journal also publishes the Special Issues on subjects of
increasing importance.
There are two Editor-in-Chiefs of the journal, namely, Prof. Hidenori

Special Issue of Int. J Robust Nonl. Control
CONTROL OF OSCILLATORY SYSTEMS
The International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control is soliciting
original papers for a special issue to be published in 2000 on control of
oscillatory systems.
Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in control of oscillatory
systems. The oscillatory systems are systems which exhibit different desired
oscillatory patterns after control is applied. Typically such systems are
highly nonlinear. Motivated by various applications in different fields of
engineering and physics an increasing interest has arisen in the control of
such systems. The field of control of oscillatory systems requires new
tools to solve new control objectives such as excitation or generation of
oscillations, changing the oscillatory properties of the system response,
control of oscillatory behavior in distributed systems, etc. It is fair to
say that some questions in this field are largely unexplored.
The purpose of the special issue of the International Journal of Robust and
Nonlinear Control is to bring together tutorial, fundamental and application
papers addressing the general theme ``Control of Oscillatory Systems''. A
particular objective of the special issue is to survey the list of possible
applied problems in the field. Subject areas include, but are not
restricted to:
Theoretical developments in control and analysis of oscillatory
systems
- treatment of different notions of stability for
oscillatory systems including absolute/robust stability
- control of bifurcations
- control of distributed oscillatory systems
- synchronization of oscillatory systems
Control techniques based on
- harmonic balance method
- hybrid and switching control
- energy/passivity and direct Lyapunov method
- linearization around nominal trajectory
Applications are sought in diverse areas including
- robotics
- communications
- power systems
- control of engines
- ecology

Dear Researcher:
The 5th Joint Conference on Information Sciences (JCIS 2000) to be held in
Atlantic City, New Jersey, February 27-March 3, 2000, actually is the 9th
conference sponsored by Duke University and the Association for Intelligent
Machinery, Inc. (AIM). The first four conferences dealt primarily with
fuzzy technology and neural networks. These were followed by joint
conferences on all aspects of information science and intelligent systems.
The acceptance of this joint effort by many researchers all over the world
says much about its appeal and the need for such an important gathering.
Not only does this "one-stop shopping" save valuable resources for
attendees, there are some researchers whose primary emphasis incorporates
several methodologies simultaneously.
Our goal can be summarized in two words-integration and commercialization.
Cognitive science is an historical example of this type of integration. We
see our role as supplementary to the efforts of major establishments that
provide invaluable service to our research community. We are serving a
small percentage of researchers working with emerging technologies that
integrate system components for successful and marketable intelligent
systems.
Selected conference papers-grouped as special issues-will be published in
Information Sciences Journal, which has the similar goal of integration and
technology transfer. We also are working diligently to negotiate an
agreement with a major publisher for an intelligent systems series
containing peer-reviewed papers received at the JCIS 2000.
Please visit our web site for the latest conference information:

conference organizers are inviting more leaders in related fields,
including Noble Laureates. To date, the following leaders in our scientific

Description:
Professor Irena Lasiecka will be the Principal Lecturer for an NSF-CBMS
Regional Research Conference on ``Mathematical Control Theory of Coupled
Systems of Partial Differential Equations.'' The aim of this lecture series
is to provide a self-contained, comprehensive exposition leading up to
state-of-the-art results. The motivation for the study of coupled systems of
PDE's comes from a variety of technological advancements in engineering
involving interactive structures such as structure/acoustic interactions,
large scale flexible structures, fluid/structure interactions, etc. These
systems are described by strongly coupled PDEs, often coupled on the
boundary, with mixed types of dynamics. The effect of the coupling prevents
the direct application of results and techniques for uncoupled equations, so
new techniques need to be developed, often based on microlocal analysis and
propagation of singularities.
In order to effectively focus attention and convey the main ideas of
the topic, the lectures will concentrate on specific benchmark models of
interactive systems: structural acoustics interactions; thermal/structure
interactions; composite plates; dynamic shells; and combinations of the
above. The lectures will provide a complete analysis of these systems
in the context of mathematical control theory, focusing on three types
of control problems which are the cornerstones of classical control
theory: optimal control, controllability, and stabilization. The first
four lectures will deal with those aspects of the theory of uncoupled
PDE's which are required for the analysis of interactive structures.
The remaining six lectures will deal directly with interactive structures.
The lecture topics are: Theory of linear and nonlinear semigroups with
unbounded forcing terms and boundary inputs; Abstract control theory
with unbounded controls and observations; PDE methods in control theory;
PDE models of interactive structures; Optimal control and optimization
problems for interactive structures; and Controllability and stabilization
of interactive structures.
