Contribution from Newsletter of Dutch Institute of Systems and Control

On August 10, George Zames passed away in his home in Montreal, after a
short illness. With him, control has lost one of the persons whose vision
and contributions shaped the field during the second half of the twentieth
century.

Zames was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1934. His family fled the Nazi invasion
of Poland, and via Russia and Japan, they ended up in Shanghai, where they
spent the remaining war years in relative tranquility. It was moving to hear
George tell during his plenary lecture at the CDC in Kobe last year that it
was thanks to the transit visa granted by the Japanese consul in Vilnius
that he and his family were able to flee Europe and come to Kobe.

After the war, Zames moved to Montreal, where he attended high school, and
then McGill University. He was a graduate student, first at Imperial College
in London and subsequently at MIT, where he received his Ph.D. in electrical
engineering in 1960. He was an assistant professor at MIT, and subsequently
joined NASA's research center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. When this center
was closed, he moved to the Technion, and after a few years he returned to
McGill where he has worked since 1974.

Zames received many awards for his work. Among these are the Killam prize
(Canada's most important scientific award), the Field Award of the IEEE
Control System Society in 1984 (the main yearly award in the field), and
several outstanding paper awards.

George's vision of control was based on two dominant insights:

    (i) the main aim of control is to cope with uncertainty,

and (ii) system models should express this uncertainty,
but a very precise model of uncertainty is an oxymoron.

It was this vision that led him to develop input/output stability theory,
with the elegant small gain and positive operator theorems, and H-infinity
control. These concepts and results have become the core of control theory.
George was suspicious of state space methods (the state space being a very
model-sensitive concept) and of stochastic models. He viewed robustness and
stability as much more central goals than optimal performance based on a
precise model. George loathed mathematical snobbery. These views have
become quite acceptable now, but they were very original in the sixties,
when control was taken by state models, optimal control, stochastics, and
the mathematization of the field.

George took keen interest in young people entering the field. As graduate
students at MIT, when Zames worked at the NASA Research Center practically
across the street, we often enjoyed the benefit of his generous sharing of
insights. My own Ph.D. dissertation was directly influenced by his
ideas. Our paths crossed very frequently since, and meeting him was always
stimulating and enjoyable. It is with great sadness that one comes to
realize that this is now a thing of the past.

NEW TELEPHONE AREA CODE 732 (AND MAILING ADDRESSES) FOR RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

Rutgers University (New Brunswick) has been assigned the new telephone area
code "732", which replaces the old code, "908". The new code is already
effective, and the old one will not be recognized within a month or so.
(A large part of Central New Jersey has been assigned the code 732 as well.)

In addition, the Post Office asked those departments that are physically
located in Piscataway (science, engineering, math, etc) to use accurate
addresses instead of the vague "New Brunswick" address. You should ask
your correspondents for their precise coordinates. For the MATHEMATICS
department at Rutgers, they are:

Department of Mathematics, Hill Center, 110 Frelinghuysen Rd
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Piscataway, NJ 08854-8019, USA

(This form should be used, also, when mailing via FedExp/UPS/DHL, etc.)

ITERATIVE LEARNING CONTROL REFERENCE LIBRARY AVAILABLE ON-LINE

An on-line bibliographic library of references related to iterative
learning control (ILC) research has been established through a
collaborative project between Kevin Moore of the Measurement and Control
Engineering Research Center at Idaho State University and Yangquan Chen,
a member of Professor Jian-Xin Xu's ILC group at the National University
of Singapore. Bib-files containing most references of ILC work between
1984-1997 can be downloaded for use in LaTeX from:

        http://www.ee.nus.sg/~yangquan/ILC/ilcref.html

Also of interest is a set of links to homepages of various ILC
researchers around the world:

        http://www.ee.nus.sg/~yangquan/ILC/ilclinks.html

Researchers who wish to add their bib files to the library or link their
homepage addresses should contact one of the following:

        Kevin Moore (moorek@isu.edu)
        Yangquan Chen (yangquan@eeserver.ee.nus.sg)

As part of the on-going project we will be building a searchable
database of all unique references that are collected. This should be
available from the web site by the end of the year.

                        ETNA on CDROM

The Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis (ETNA) was one of the
first completely electronic scientific journals when it was launched four
years ago.

ETNA has the following features:

* Manuscripts submitted to ETNA undergo peer review.
* Mathematical Reviews reviews all articles appearing in ETNA.
* Manuscripts may have color graphics.
* No annual page limitations makes fast publication possible.
* Key word search available.
* Forward referencing.
* ETNA can be accessed via the Internet by web browsers, ftp and e-mail.
* First four volumes of ETNA available on CDROM.

The CDROM version of ETNA can be accessed by a web browser (Mosaic).
Accessing ETNA in this manner is much more convenient than accessing ETNA
over the Internet when the Internet connection is slow. Many new PCs are
equipped with a CDROM reader. This makes the CDROM a convenient storage
medium for individuals and libraries.

The first ETNA CDROM contains papers with leading-edge contributions to
research in the following diverse areas of numerical analysis, analysis,
linear algebra and applications:

 - conjugate gradient iterative methods and their variants,
   for solving linear systems and for obtaining eigenvalues;
 - general iterative methods for systems of linear equations,
including parallel synchronous and asynchronous multi-splitting and
   inner-outer iteration methods;
 - singular value and QR decompositions of matrices;
 - applications of domain decomposition, multigrid, and finite
 - element methods, and their preconditioning;
 - Runge-Kutta methods, solutions of differential-algebraic
   and Riccati equations in ordinary differential equation theory;
 - numerical treatment of analysis problems, including Gaussian
quadrature, Pade' approximations and continued fractions, and the
   Riemann Hypothesis.
 - applications of numerical analysis, e.g., in signal processing and
   control theory.

In addition the CDROM contains a variety of public domain software programs
(for Windows, Windows95, Sun Unix, SGI Unix, HP Unix, Digital Unix, and
Macintosh operating systems) that will allow you to display and print the
manuscripts included on the CDROM.

In order to defray the cost of producing the CDROM and to cover
shipping (by air mail), we are charging $25 for each CDROM. If you
wish to purchase the ETNA CDROM, please send $25.00 (money order,
travelers check, personal check for a U.S. bank or bank draft in U.S.
dollars) to

                        CALL FOR PAPERS

                       Special issue on
"Breakthrough in the control of nonlinear systems"

              in International Journal Control.

The editorial board of International Journal Control decided to have a
special issue of the journal on "Breakthrough in the control of nonlinear
systems".

The field of control of nonlinear systems develops tools and systematic
design procedures which guarantee that the desired feedback systems will
possess desired properties not only locally, but also globally or in a
specified
region of the state space. The major goals of this special issue
is to regroup the newly developed theory of nonlinear systems which
brings new concepts for complex but very common fundamental questions
arising in nonlinear control theory. Each time it will be possible,
the technology applicability of the design controllers will be demonstrated.

We invite innovative original papers on the following topics

- Nonlinear mechanical systems and control
- Stabilization and tracking of nonlinear systems
- Robust nonlinear control design
- Nonlinear adaptive control
- Optimal control

to be submitted to the guest editor. Four copies of the manuscript

Joint Special Issue on Nonlinear Control of Induction Motors

              IEEE Trans. on Industrial Electronics
                            and
Int. J. on Adaptive Control and Signal Processing

Induction motors constitute a theoretically interesting and practically
important class of nonlinear systems which are evolving into a benchmark
example for nonlinear control. They are described by a fifth order nonlinear
differential equation with two inputs and only three state variables
available for measurement. The control task is further complicated by the
fact that induction motors are subject to unknown (load) disturbances and
the parameters are highly uncertain. We are faced then with the challenging
problem of controlling a highly nonlinear system, with unknown time varying
parameters, where the regulated output, besides being not measurable, is
perturbed by an unknown additive signal. Existing solutions to this
problem, in particular the de--facto industry standard field--oriented
control, are not theoretically well understood and suffer from some serious
drawbacks, both in commissioning and high performance applications. These
compeling factors, together with the recent development of powerful
theoretical tools for analysis and synthesis of nonlinear systems, has
motivated some control researchers to tackle this problem.

It is fair to say that our understanding of the problem has matured
considerably with the publication of several globally stable algorithms, the
rigourous establishment of stability proofs for classical schemes, and the
discovery of some interesting connections between the new controllers and
the ones used in industry. Since a wide variety of ``modern" (apparently
unrelated) techniques has been used to develop these new control algorithms,
it is clear that the resulting controllers will exhibit different transients
and possess different robustness properties. In order to provide some
perspective on the advantages and disadvantages of all these approaches it
is interesting to carry--out a comparative study of these schemes on a
benchmark problem. Towards this end the IEEE Trans. on Industrial
Electronics and the International J. on Adaptive Control and Signal
Processing are preparing a special issue devoted to the control of induction
motors with the following procedure:

1. A joint editorial committee will
split the papers with some criterion that reflects the
interest of the different audiences, for instance
"theoretically-founded" (e.g., stability proofs available),
or not.

2. Some of the algorithms will be tested in a
machine and compared in a paper that the
editorial committee will write. This paper will be
published in both journals.

3. If the authors want their algorithm to be considered for
this comparison, they should consult the following web page for
instructions

http://www.supelec.fr/invi/lss/fr/personnels/ortega/benchmi/benchmi.html

where further details on the model, the test signals and the
performance specifications are given. The matlab files to
carry out the simulations, by simply plugging--in the proposed controller,
can be downloaded from this page.

4. For the sake of comparison, we encourage the
authors to try the tests of the web example (or similar ones)
in whatever experimental (or simulated) evidence they might
want to provide.

5. Five copies of the complete manuscript, marked Special
Issue on Induction Motors, should be submitted by
February 15, 1998 to:

Romeo Ortega
Laboratoire des Signaux et Systemes
CNRS-SUPELEC, UMR CNRS 16
91192, Gif-sur-Yvette
FRANCE
rortega@lss.supelec.fr

6. Authors will be notified of results of the reviews by May
15, 1998. The special issues are tentatively scheduled for
publication in December 1998.

Call for Papers -- 37th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control

Hyatt Regency Westshore, Tampa, Florida, USA, December 16-18, 1998

The IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) Conference on Decision and Control
(CDC) is the annual meeting of the IEEE Control Systems Society, conducted
in cooperation with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
(SIAM). The thirty-seventh CDC will be held December 16-18, 1998, with
tutorial workshops preceding the conference on Monday and Tuesday, December
14-15. The Conference General Chairman is J. Douglas Birdwell of the
University of Tennessee (e-mail: birdwell@utk.edu), and the program chairman
is David Castaon of Boston University (e-mail: dac@bu.edu). The venue is the
Hyatt Regency Westshore Tampa Florida. Tampa offers a multicultural spectrum
of dining, arts, and entertainment, as well as the beaches of Clearwater and
St. Petersburg on the Western side of Tampa Bay. Cultural attractions
include the new Tampa Aquarium, Busch Gardens, and the shops, nightclubs,
and restaurants of Ybor City. The Westshore is located on Tampa Bay and is
one of Hyatt's top-rated hotels with grounds that are a wetland sanctuary
for wildlife.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTED PAPERS AND INVITED SESSIONS

The IEEE CDC will include both contributed and invited sessions, and a full
Proceedings will be published. Contributed papers are solicited in all aspects
of the theory and applications of systems, including decision-making, control,
adaptation, optimization, industrial automation, and manufacturing. Invited
sessions are also solicited in new developments in these and related areas. All
submissions are due 3 MARCH 1998.

CONTRIBUTED PAPERS: The Program Committee is soliciting both Regular and
Short contributed papers for presentation at the conference and publication
in the Proceedings. Regular papers describe completed work in some
detail. Short papers describe important recent or preliminary results that
require limited length. Short papers may be submitted for review as a 4-6
page detailed summary, with references.

INVITED SESSIONS: The Program Committee is soliciting proposals for invited
sessions. Cohesive sessions focusing on new or emerging topics in the
above-listed areas are particularly encouraged, and will have priority over
those of a classical or mainstream flavor. Session organizers should submit
five (5) copies of proposals for invited sessions for review to the Program
Vice-Chair for Invited Sessions at the address on the opposite side. All
invited session proposals must be accompanied by all the information for all
the proposed papers and mailed together as a group. Organizers must contact
the Vice-Chair for Invited Sessions by 3 FEBRUARY 1998 stating their intent
to submit a proposal and the accompanying papers.

Proposals for invited sessions should contain the names, affiliations, and
complete mailing addresses of the session organizer(s), chairperson,
co-chairperson, and all authors (with corresponding authors identified)
along with a list of paper titles. The organizers must include in the
proposal: (1) a clear statement of the topic and purpose of the session and
(2) a description of how the papers form a cohesive, well-integrated
exploration of the session topic. Detailed extended summaries, following the
submission guidelines below and consisting of a minimum of 2000 words,
covering all contributions of the paper in sufficient depth to permit an
informed review, must be included for each paper. The initial paper may be a
tutorial or survey that can be allotted twice the usual time for
presentation. The usual number of papers in a session is six. Organizers
will be contacted near 1 June 1998 concerning the tentative disposition of
their session.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND ACCEPTANCE INFORMATION

Each submitted regular paper, short paper extended summary, or invited
session proposal must be accompanied by the Manuscript Submission Form. This
form is on the reverse side of the Call for Papers form and can also be
obtained by e-mail request to the publicity chairman, David A. Schoenwald of
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (e-mail: schoenwaldda@ornl.gov). Addresses,
deadlines, and other submission requirements may be found on that
form. Incomplete submissions or submissions by fax or electronic mail cannot
be accepted. A web site for the 1998 CDC will soon be up at the address,
http://www.lit.net/ieee/cdc98, which will contain the submission form as
well as other information about the conference.

Final selection of papers and invited sessions will be announced in July 1998.
Authors of all accepted papers will be provided instructions for preparation of
manuscripts for the Proceedings. Authors should limit their manuscripts to six
Proceedings pages (approx. 6000 words) for regular papers or two proceedings
pages (approx. 2000 words) for short papers. There will be a mandatory page
charge for each additional page. Manuscripts must arrive at the Printer by 18
AUGUST 1998. Authors of accepted papers are expected to attend the CDC to
present their work.

              International Workshop on
            Advanced Control and Decision
Support Systems for WasteWater Treatment Plants

Building purely mathematical models, control algorithms
and diagnosis scheme of biological wastewater
treatment plants (WWTP) is among the most difficult tasks.
On the other hand, in many cases, it is possible to
make use of the human operator experience in order to :
- handle ill-defined situations,
- characterise the process dynamics by symbolic and logic description,
- check the data consistency, equipment failure or
  contamination of the process,
- decide the most appropriate control strategies according
  to the process evolution.

When looking for optimisation of WWTP, it is thus of the most
importance to develop advanced and robust control algorithms
and to link these control scheme to decision support systems
capable of handling the specificity of biological activity of
micro-organisms.

The main objectives of this workshop are :
- to review the current state-of-the-art in control and
  diagnosis systems of WWTP,
- to discuss recent advances in Artificial Intelligence
  for the optimisation of WWTP,
- to diffuse main scientific results towards potential
  industrial applications and to provide
  opportunities for future R&D collaborations

The following topics will be covered during this workshop :
- process integration and control strategies for the
optimisation of industrial and/or urban WWTP,
- advanced control scheme for industrial and/or urban WWTP,
- Artificial Intelligence to improve diagnosis in industrial
  and/or urban WWTP.

                      CALL FOR PAPERS

1998 International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction in Aeronautics

                         HCI-Aero'98

                       May 27-29, 1998
                       Montreal, Canada

                        Organized by
         EURISCO (European Institute of Cognitive
                  Sciences and Engineering)

OBJECTIVES

The 1998 International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction in
Aeronautics (HCI-Aero'98) will provide a forum for the best of current
research and industrial innovative applications. It will enable participants
to build a common frame of reference for exploring crucial issues induced by
human-computer interaction in design, evaluation, operations, maintenance,
management and training in aeronautics. The technical program will be
enhanced by social events and opportunities for extensive interaction
with colleagues from different countries and disciplines.

HCI-Aero'98 follows a series of conferences that were organized in Toulouse
(France) in 1986, 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1995. These conferences were called
Human-Machine Interaction and Artificial Intelligence in Aerospace
(HMI-AI-AS). They gathered many well recognized experts from academia and
industry in the fields of Human-Machine Interaction, Artificial Intelligence
and Aerospace. Over the years, Human-Computer Interaction has emerged as a
crucial and necessary field of investigation to analyze, design and evaluate
in aeronautics environments. Manufacturers have developed and integrated
new software agents in aircraft cockpits. New issues have also emerged, such
as how to certify, operate and learn the use of such artificial agents. This
is the reason why we have forged the name HCI-Aero for this conference.

HCI-Aero'98 will bring together researchers and practitioners with an
interest in methods, techniques, tools, and technology for constructing,
evaluating, maintaining and using modern aircraft cockpits.

You are invited to participate in this forum by proposing papers, posters,
videos or demonstrations that present:

     Multidisciplinary investigations
     Industrial experience
Challenging perspectives and solutions to current aviation problems

THEMES

1. Design and Evaluation
This theme covers research efforts and experience in design and
evaluation of computer-based tools that support operations in
aeronautics.

2. Corporate Memory
Task and tool understanding is a critical aspect of any organization. In
aeronautics, computers have emerged to contribute to a reorganization of
work.

3. Operations and Maintenance
This theme emphasizes analyses and experimentations of crucial aspects
of new generation cockpits.

4. Task Models and Training
The use of computer-based technology in the cockpit is closely related
to the way pilots are trained. New needs and requirements are emerging
from this
evolution.

CONFERENCE STRUCTURE

As the traditional HMI-AI-AS conferences, HCI-Aero'98 will offer:

Paper presentations that include keynote speeches, selected
     articles, posters and videos.
Specialized workshops where participants will exchange ideas, form
consensus and elicit differences in approaches.

5th Symposium on Low Cost Automation
Shenyang, P. R. China, September 8-10, 1998

Scope

Different applications fields benefit from automation by introducing
suitable control strategies and devices without relevant modifications
of the whole system or of the productive process. This aim should be
achieved by a low cost automation approach.

The objective of this Symposium is to bring together end-users and control
systems specialists to evaluate the possibilities of techniques, design
procedures, components and instruments to achieve a low cost automation,
not only considering all the economic aspects but also the improvements
in productivity, reliability, flexibility, and facility of implementation.
Special emphasis should be pleased on small and medium-sized enterprises.

The former four low cost automation symposia, held in Valencia 1986,
Milan 1989, Vienna 1992 and Buenos Aires 1995, showed the wide range of
applications and the great interest from an industrial point of view of
these techniques.

                        SUMMARY

Dr W. David Smith, Jr
Topic: Process Control in the Chemical Industry for 2000 and Beyond

Personal:
Dr David Smith, Jr is Research Manager responsible for Advanced Process
Control and Optimisation at DuPont, based in USA. He maintains an important
link with the academic research community, and serves on the advisory
boards of various chemical engineering departments.
He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the DuPont Vice
President's Award for Excellence in Engineering in 1990, and the AIChE
Chemical Engineering Practice Award in 1996. He was also named the Plastics
Industry Control Engineer of the Year in 1993.

Abstract:
This talk will briefly review the economic and social factors that have set
new goals for the chemical process industries, and then explore in some
detail the role that process control can play in meeting those goals. In
particular, I will describe some new directions for process control in
DuPont. In addition we will consider ways that university researchers,
process control vendors, and industrial practitioners can work together to
make faster progress in the development and application of advanced process
control.

Graham LePage
Topic: Process Control and Mineral Processing: Trends and Perspectives

Personal:
Graham is a Senior Process Systems Engineer with Alcoa of Australia
Limited, based in WA. He has both bachelor's and master's degrees in
Chemical Engineering, and has had over fifteen years experience applying
process control technology to Alcoa alumina refineries in WA. Graham is now
actively working on project to transfer control technology across seven
refineries in five countries in Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals (AWAC)
group.

Abstract:
Minerals processing industries have perhaps been slower to adopt process
control technologies than other industry groups, but this situation is now
changing. Alcoa of Australia Limited is an integrated producer of alumina
and aluminium, that is seeking to improve the utilisation of control
technologies, particularly in its alumina business units. The presentation
discusses the directions and trends emerging in this process, including the
globilisation of the business units; the opportunities to develop and
transfer technologies between Alcoa refineries around the world; the
development of a strong partnering relationship with Honeywell Inc and the
impacts of this on resource allocation and work structuring; the
application of advanced control and simulation techniques such as model
predictive control and dynamic simulation for operator training and control
systems optimisation; and the overriding need to tie all this activity back
to the business needs of the company.
