                 Need for Test Examples

We have recently developed an algorithm for checking robust stability of a
polynomial with polynomial parameter dependency. The results will appear in
part in the IEEE Trans. Automatic Control.
To test our algorithm for several stability regions D we would highly
appreciate it receiving examples for polynomial parameter dependency (up to
20 parameters) in the case of
- Hurwitz stability (real or complex coefficient functions), i.e. D is the
open left half of the complex plane;
- Schur stability, i.e. D is the open unit disc;
- sector stability, i.e. D is a sector centered around the negative real axis.
Presenty we are extending our results to the case of exponential parameter
dependency. Therefore, we would appreciate receiving also examples for this
type of parameter dependency.
It would be convenient if you would send the coefficient functions together
with the intervals in which the parameters are allowed to vary if a
stability check has to be performed. The following example shows the form in
which we would prefer to receive the polynomial family:

  p(s,q1,q2):=1.234*s^3+2.5*s^2*q1*q2+s*q1;
  q1 in ( 0,2 )
  q2 in ( 1,3.1 )

If you are interested in the computation of the stability margin please send
us the stable nominal polynomial. In any case we would be grateful if you
would give us a reference for the polynomial family.
Your collaboration is highly appreciated.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RESULTS OF A QUESTIONNAIRE SET UP BY THE

       EUROPEAN NUMERICS IN CONTROL NETWORK N I C O N E T

More about NICONET (http://www.win.tue.nl/wgs/niconet.html)
==================
The Commission of the European Communities has given an exploratory award to
WGS in order to set up a thematic Numerics in Control network in the field
of Industrial and Applied Technologies, entitled NICONET (contract number:
BRRT-CT96-0038). The aim is to formalise and extend our current collaboration
into a European network to coordinate the development of robust numerical
software for control systems analysis and design.
Such software is an essential ingredient in modern computer aided control
system design (CACSD) and thus for the future of high-tech European industry.

In order to evaluate the proposed network, we have set up a questionnaire
for obtaining:
1. an inventory of existing research activities in control software;
2. a list of potential partners ready to contribute actively to NICONET,
3. an assessment of the relevance of the NICONET objectives and activities.

The results of this questionnaire are now available and reported in our
WGS newsletter 11, which can be obtained:
- via WWW at http://www.win.tue.nl/wgs/newslet.html),
- via anonymous ftp from wgs.esat.kuleuven.ac.be as a compressed file
  issue11.ps.Z in the directory pub/WGS/NEWSLETTER.

Readers who are interested in this activity can still fill in the
questionnaire in order to identify themselves for potential future
collaboration. This questionnaire should be returned to Sabine Van Huffel
and is available by anonymous ftp (at wgs.esat.kuleuven.ac.be in the
directory pub/WGS/NEWSLETTER) and as a form on the World Wide Web
(http://www.win.tue.nl/wgs/niconet.html).

                      NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT:

TITLE: Computer-Controlled Systems 3rd edition

AUTHORS: Karl J. Astrom and Bjorn Wittenmark

ISBN: 0-13-314899-8

PUBLISHER: Prentice-Hall Inc.

This book intendeds to give the knowledge, and understanding required to
analyze and design computer-controlled systems effectively. It combines
fundamental theory with engineering insight. The second edition of this book
was awarded the IFAC textbook prize in 1993.

This third edition is a major revision based on the advances in technology
and the experiences from teaching to academic and industrial audiences. The
material has been drastically reorganized with more than half the text
rewritten. The advances in theory and practice of computer-controlled
systems and a desire to put more focus on design issues have provided the
motivation for the changes in the third edition. Many new results have been
incorporated. Another major change in the third edition is that the
computational tools Matlab and Simulink have been used extensively. This
changes the pedagogy in teaching substantially. All major results are
formulated in such a way that the computational tools can be applied
directly. For instance, all macros to generate the illustrations in the book
are available over the Web.

This is a republication of a research monograph, first published in 1978 by
Academic Press, but now out-of-print. It provides a general and
comprehensive development of the mathematical foundations of stochastic
optimal control of discrete-time systems, including the treatment of the
intricate measure-theoretic issues. It provides much in-depth analysis not
found in any other book.

Among its special features, the book:

** resolves definitively the mathematical issues of discrete-time
stochastic optimal control problems, including Borel models, and
semi-continuous models

** establishes the most general possible theory of finite and infinite
horizon stochastic dynamic programming models, through the use of
analytic sets and universally measurable policies

** develops general frameworks for dynamic programming based on abstract
contraction and monotone mappings

** provides extensive background on analytic sets, Borel spaces and
their probability measures

Scope:
This unusual book addresses a number of common control problems from an
experimental engineering perspective, using low-cost, laboratory-based
systems. In each case a laboratory set-up and experiments are described,
along with theoretical context and results from implementation. It
therefore complements conventional theoretical books and textbooks. It is
highly international, emanating from a European Tempus project (IMPACT). In
addition to its value to teachers of control, as well as students, it will
be of interest to practising control engineers seeking new insight to their
own practical problems.

Contents:
1: Process model identification  J Pico et al.;
2: Analogue controller design  W Badelt & R Strietzel;
3: Classic controller design  P Bikfalvi & I Szabo;
4: Integral wind-up in control and system simulation  Bulc;
5: Control of unstable systems  D Juricic & J Kocijan;
6: The problem of delays in temperature and heatflow rate control  P Zitek;

    B Koppen-Seliger; 16: Microcomputer-based implementations for dc motor
    drive control  C Lazar et al;
17: Software design for realtime systems  A Braune ;
Index.

The main purpose of each contribution is to identify an industrial control
problem, discuss the different approaches to solve it and suggest easy to
implement laboratory rigs to get practical knowledge about this and related
problems. The common structure of the contributions is:
- the treatment of a well defined and motivated industrial control problem,
- the outline of the involved control theory,
- the discussion of alternative approaches to deal with it,
- the basic laboratory set-up to reproduce the scenario (sometimes just by
simulation),
- some suggested experiments to grasp the basic concepts of the problem,
- illustrative results obtained by the proposed set-up, useful as a
guideline for local replications,
- final comments and conclusions followed by an introductory bibliography

Readership: Electrical / control / systems engineers.

Level: Academic; professional; reference.

There is a growing body of experimental work suggesting that artificial
neural networks can be very adept at solving pattern classification problems
where there is significant real-world uncertainty. Neural networks also
provide an analog method for quickly determining approximate solutions to
complex optimization problems. Both of these capabilities can be of great
use in solving various control problems and in recent years there has been
increased interest in the use of artificial neural networks in the control
and supervision of complex dynamical systems.

This announcement is a call for papers addressing the topic of neural
networks in control, identification, and decision making. Accepted papers
will be published in a special issue of the IEEE Transactions of Automatic
Control. The special issue is seeking papers which use formal analysis to
establish the role of neural networks in control, identification, and
decision making. For this reason, papers consisting primarily of empirical
simulation results will not be considered for publication. Before
submitting, prospective authors should consult past issues of the IEEE
Transactions on Automatic Control to identify the type of results and the
level of mathematical rigor that are the norm in this journal.

Submitted papers are due by July 1, 1997 and should be sent to Michael D.
Lemmon or Anthony N. Michel. Notification of acceptance decisions will be
sent by December 31, 1997. The special issue is targeted for publication in
1998 or early 1999. All papers will be refereed in accordance with IEEE
guidelines. Please consult the inside back cover of any recent issue of the
Transactions on Automatic Control for style and length of the manuscript and
the number of required copies (seven copies with cover letter) to be sent to
one of the editors of this special issue.

ADVANCES IN COMPUTATIONAL ASPECTS OF TELETRAFFIC MODELS

There has been substantial recent developments in the teletraffic analysis
of modern telecommunications systems. Traffic is the driving force for
telecommunication networks. Models to be used in either a simulation
experiment or mathematical analysis are of crucial importance for network
design and engineering. In addition to appropriate models, efficient
simulation and analytic methodologies are also required.

The aim of this issue of J-SAC is to focus attention on the computational
aspects of performance analysis, to efficiently predict delay, loss,
blocking, etc. in telecommunication systems. Of particular interest will be
algorithmic methodologies leading to efficient and robust computation,
parallel and vector algorithms, large scale computation, etc. Topics
include, but are not limited to the following:

   + Unified Teletraffic Theory
+ End-to-End Performance Models and Analysis
+ Modeling and Analysis Methodologies Leading to Design Tools
   + Efficient Numerical Algorithms
+ Real Time Model Building and Computation
   + Parallelism and Large-Scale Computation
+ Fractal and Spatial Process in Networks
   + Blocking in Large Systems
+ Rare Events Probability Estimation in Networks
+ Traffic Characterization of Fractal and Self-Similar Traffic
+ Control Strategies in High-Speed Networks

Original, unpublished research articles will be considered. All articles
will be evaluated according to a two-stage process as follows. Prospective
authors are first required to submit a summary of their paper (limited to 5
single-space pages) to one of the Guest Editors listed below by JULY 1,
1997. Commitment notification is anticipated for SEPTEMBER 1, 1997. If a
summary is accepted, complete manuscript will be requested for submission by
NOVEMBER 1, 1997, for full review. The anticipated publication date for this
issue will be SECOND QUARTER 1998.

The editorial board of the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear
Control has decided to devote a special issue to "Control problem with
constraints".

Most control problems involve constraints on actuators, sensors, and often
also certain state variables. Classically, controllers were designed such
that the system stayed away from critical areas where contraints become
active. On the other hand, higher performance requirements often result in
systems that have to operate closer to these critical areas. This has clear
potential benefits but requires a carefull analysis that takes into account
the nonlinear effects induced by the constraints.

Even though the problem is very important, there are only very few results
available how to deal with systems that are subject of contraints. However,
in recent years, the tide is changing and a lot of research effort has been
put into the study of these kind of systems. Papers suitable for this
special issue might discuss recent progress as well as discussing future
directions.

People interested in contributing to this special issue are invited to
contact one of us as soon as convenient. Note that the deadline for
submission of the manuscript is April 15, 1997.

Haptic interfaces are devices that allow human-machine interaction through
force and touch. Areas of application include, but are by no means limited
to, telemanipulation (for work in hazardous or challenging settings such as
space exploration and microsurgery), and virtual environments (for human
operator training, design prototyping, and data visualization).

This symposium aims to bring together the diverse disciplines that will
contribute to future advances in this field, including engineering, computer
science, biomechanics, psychology, and neurophysiology. Topics of interest
include mechanism design, control system design and analysis, haptic
rendering and world modeling algorithms, human factors, sensory processes,
perception, and biological motor control.

                   Special Session on Learning Control
                   -----------------------------------

OVERVIEW
--------
SCI'97 is a truly multi-disciplinary conference, covering intelligent
computing, information theory, cybernetics, social and biological systems,
psychology, and applications. General information about the conference is
listed below or can be found at the website

  http://www.iiis.org/

SCI'97 is an ideal platform for a special session on "Learning Control", an
emerging discipline which is receiving more and more attention from both the
academic and industrial controls community, due to the increasing complexity
of (technical) systems.

LEARNING CONTROL
----------------
"Learning Control" is a term attributed to a broad class of self-tuning
processes, where the performance of the controlled system with respect to a
particular task is self-improved based on the performance for previous
identical tasks. The idea of self-learning control systems is aesthetically
appealing and represents a fundamental step towards fully autonomous
systems. This is of advantage when dealing with uncertain or changing
systems.

The major difference between adaptive and learning control is sometimes
characterized in terms of 'local' and 'global' learning. An adaptive
systems continuously adapts to changes in environment and system para-
meters (local), whereas a learning systems memorizes and recognizes
previously experienced situations (global). The classification of learning
control will be one of many topics at this SCI'97 session. We invite you to
present your recent research results, learn about current avenues in the
field, and to meet interesting people.

TOPICS
------
The Learning Control Session will include, but is not limited, to the
following topics (further suggestions are encouraged):

     * Classification of learning control systems.

     * Mathematical learning theory in a controls context.

     * Biological or social self-learning control mechanisms and
       their extension to technical systems.

     * Human operator modeling.
Human operators are (currently) the ultimate learning controller
       for complex systems.

     * Neurocontrol, using biological or artificial neural networks.

     * Fuzzy logic and learning.

     * Optimal Control type learning algorithms (adaptive critics,
       Q-learning, etc.).

     * Variable structure learning of controllers and its
variants, e.g. reconfigurable and reparameterizable controllers.

     * Stability of learning control systems (important!).

     * Hardware implementations.

     * Applications and case studies which exceed the usual benchmark
       problems towards real-world complex systems.

Questions about, or contributions to this special session can be
e-mailed to Karl Mathia at

                 University of California, Santa Barbara

                              INVITATION

Dear colleagues,

We would like to invite you to participate in the Workshop on `Dynamical
Systems and Statistical Mechanics Methods for Coherent Structures in
Turbulent Flows' to be held on 12th and 13th of February 1997 at the
University of California, Santa Barbara. This workshop will focus on the
challenge of developing new dynamical systems and statistical theories of
coherent structures in turbulent fluid flows and their applications in
geophysics, engineering and elsewhere.

The workshop will be divided into two days:

First day (Wednesday, February 12th):

Dynamical systems methods for understanding motion of vortical structures
and Lagrangian properties of flows dominated by them.

Second day (Thursday, February 13th):

Statistical Mechanics Methods for understanding motion of vortical
structures and Lagrangian properties of flows dominated by them.

The goal of the conference is to try to understand how to combine the
statistical and dynamical systems approaches to create new theories of
coherent structures motion and Lagrangian properties of fluid flows.

The workshop will be very flexible and informal: there will be two or three
speakers each morning who will give a long talk on one of the themes of the
workshop for that day. A number of shorter talks will be scheduled in the
afternoon. The discussion sessions will be organized after the day's talks
are over, followed by a dinner.

We hope that we will see you soon in Santa Barbara!
Yours sincerely,

Marie Farge, Igor Mezic

control technology. For this event we are highlighting a major cross-
disciplinary area that has gained prominence recently, ACTIVE CONTROL.
We have picked a time and place where you may combine the technical
excitement of state-of-the-art control applications with New England's
historical, cultural and scenic opportunities -- in particular, its
spectacular Fall Foliage season.

The program committee solicits papers presenting original work in all
aspects of the application of control techniques such as:

** Adaptive Control ** Artificial Intelligence ** Control & Modeling

Hybrid systems are interacting networks of digital and continuous systems.
Hybrid systems arise throughout business and industry in such areas as
interactive distributed simulation, traffic control, plant process control,
military command and control, aircraft and robot design, and path planning.
Three of the fundamental problems that hybrid systems theory should address
are: How to model physical and information systems as hybrid systems; How to
verify that their behavior satisfies program or performance specifications;
How to extract from performance specifications for a network of physical
systems and their simulation models digital control programs which will
force the network to obey its performance specification.

This rapidly developing area is at the interface of control, engineering and
computer science. Methods under development are extensions of those from
from diverse areas such as program verification, concurrent and ditributed
processes, logic programming, logics of programs, discrete event simulation,
dynamical systems, calculus of variations, optimization, differential
geometry, Lie algebras, automata, dynamical systems, etc.

To see the range of coverage, consult Hybrid Systems (Springer LNCS 736),
Hybrid Systems II (Springer LNCS 999), and later Hybrid Systems III
(Springer LNCS,1066). These resulted from previous workshops at
MSI/Cornell (June 10-12, 1991), the Technical University Lyngby, Denmark
(Oct 19-21, 1992), MSI Cornell (Oct 28-30, 1994), and DIMACS/SYCON,
Rutgers (Oct. 22-25, 1995). Springer LNCS volume Hybrid Systems IV,
which will appear in mid 1997, resulted from the 1996 Hybrid Systems
workshop at MSI/Cornell (October 12-14, 1996).

The UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME will host HYBRID SYSTEMS V (HS97), Thursday,
September 11, 1997- Saturday, September 13, 1997, on the University Campus
in Notre Dame, Indiana, USA. The IEEE Control Systems Society is a
Technical Cosponsor of this meeting.

                          3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ADPM'98
AUTOMATION OF MIXED PROCESSES : DYNAMIC HYBRID SYSTEMS

                          REIMS - FRANCE, 19-20 March 1998

SCOPE
Automation can nowadays no longer be either continuous or discrete. Coping
with: various operating modes, increased flexibility and dependability
constraints, batch processes, and controlling production flow, demand a
broad approach combining the concepts, models, theories, and know-how both
from continuous control systems, and from discrete-event systems.
The expressions Mixed processes or Dynamic Hybrid Systems designate the
class of systems that explicitly and simultaneously include continuous and
event based phenomena or models.
Following the success of the two previous conferences ADPM'92 (held in
Paris) and ADPM'94 (held in Brussels), the Dynamic Hybrid Systems working
group of the AFCET/SEE has taken the initiative of organising the 3rd
international Conference ADPM'98 in Reims, on March 19th and 20th 1998. This
conference has the twofold objective of providing a survey of the advances
in this field and of setting up contacts between researchers and
industrials, whether they have control, electronics or informatics
background. The material submitted must be original and related to one of
the theoretical or practical aspects of modelling, analysis or synthesis of
hybrid systems.
