WORKSHOP ON NONLINEAR ANALYSIS AND CONTROL THEORY

June 21-25, 1999 Porto, Portugal

WEB PAGE

SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP

The central theme of the workshop is the interaction between a certain complex of ideas in nonlinear and nonsmooth analysis on the one hand, and its attendant applications in control on the other. The considerable surge of activity in the area of viscosity solutions, and many recent developments in such fields as critical point theory and functional analysis, are based upon these ideas whose common denominator is the need to deal analytically with nonsmooth phenomena. It is only recently that the surprising degree of unity among the various parts of this complex is truly becoming apparent, and we expect the workshop to be an influential event in the subject. The workshop will have plenary lectures, contributed sessions and generous time for discussions. Recognized experts will lecture on those aspects of nonlinear analysis that are principally involved:

* nonsmooth analysis
* variational principles
* viscosity solutions
* discontinuous differential equations

as well as on relevant topics in control theory:

* stabilization and feedback synthesis
* differential games
* robust and optimal control

This Workshop, then, will be devoted in part to the training of researchers on the dual theme of nonlinear analysis, together with modern control theory and differential equations from a unified point of view. A further objective is to highlight unsolved problems and new application areas in which the underlying mathematical techniques in question seem destined to play an important role. These topics include shape optimization, hysteresis, and nonsmooth methods in collision theory and elasticity.

LOCATION

The Workshop on Nonlinear Analysis and Control Theory will take place at Seminario de Vilar, a Conference Centre, right in the heart of Porto, overlooking River Douro. Porto, internationally known for its Port Wine, is the metropolis and trade centre of the North of Portugal. The airport, 20 mins drive from the city, provides daily services to many of the main cities in the world. Located by the sea and on the north bank of River Douro, Porto is certainly an imposing sight to the visitor. The end of June is the one of the best times of the year to visit Porto. In addition to the temperate climate and long days, there is on the 23rd the not-to-be-missed "Festa de S. João". Within easy reach from Porto there is a wide variety of sites you can visit from rugged mountains to peaceful valleys and a lovely seaside. All year round, the very hospitable people of the North of Portugal offer a warm welcome to all.

ACCOMMODATION

The Conference Centre, Seminario de Vilar has around 100 simple and comfortable rooms, at very reasonable rates. All rooms in Seminerio de Vilar have two single beds and bathroom. However they are not equipped with telephone or TV set. Those attending the Workshop may book a room at Seminario de Vilar by filling in the form available on the Web site and send it by fax or post to the Seminario de Vilar. Please do not hesitate to contact the Workshop organization in case of any difficulties or to find alternative accommodation.
