CALL FOR PAPERS 3RD IEEE MEDITERRANEAN SYMPOSIUM ON NEW DIRECTIONS IN CONTROL AND AUTOMATION July 11-13, 1995 Sheraton Hotel Limassol, CYPRUS Co-Sponsoring Organizations: IEEE Control Systems Society University of Cyprus, Cyprus The Technical University of Crete, Greece IEEE Cyprus Section IEE Cyprus Section The Greek Chapter of the IEEE Control Systems Society The 3rd Mediterranean Symposium is a continuation of the 1st and 2nd successful symposia that took place in Crete, Greece. The site for the 3rd symposium is chosen to be on the island of Cyprus, located in the east part of the Mediterranean Sea at the crossroads of three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa. The Sheraton Hotel at Limassol, Cyprus is chosen as the conference site. The hotel is a five star hotel located on the beach a few miles away from downtown Limassol. The central theme of the 3rd IEEE Mediterranean Symposium is control, automation with emphasis on the current theoretical developments as well as the latest applications to engineering problems. The purpose of having such a broad theme is to bring together researchers and engineers from different areas with overlapping interests to identify new problems and future directions in the area of control and automation. New and fast emerging technologies in the areas of transportation, environmental engineering, multimedia, robotics, manufacturing and others, open the way for new and unique applications of control and automation that will be addressed in the conference. The program will include invited survey papers by leading international authorities on several topics that cover the broad theme of the symposium. About Cyprus: Cyprus is an island, the third largest in the Mediterranean and standing as it does at the crossroads of three continents Europe, Asia and Africa it has a tumultuous history. The Mycenaeans brought their civilization here, established the first Greek roots thousands of years ago. Many others passed through, including Phoenicians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Crusaders, Venetians, Ottomans, and the British. The disciples of Christ walked this land. The splendor of Byzantium, founded by Constantine the Great at Constantinople, encompassed the island of Cyprus. Here are prehistoric settlements, ancient Greek temples, Roman theaters, villas, early Christian basilicas, Byzantine churches, impressive monasteries, offering unique facilities for Byzantine studies, Crusader castles, Gothic churches, Venetian fortifications. In the villages, old customs and traditions are still kept alive. Young girls still engage in lace-making in the beautiful village of Lefkara just as their grandmothers did before them. Potters still create wondrous anthropomorphic shapes to decorate their earthenware vessels at picturesque Phini in the Troodos mountains, and the sound of hand-looms can still be heard in Phiti, home of attractive hand-woven materials, whilst still, men in traditional baggy trousers congregate at the coffee shop for a game of backgammon and to listen to, and discuss the day's news. The beautiful beaches and scenery, the Cypriot food and hospitality combined with the rich history of places make Cyprus one of the most popular tourist attractions. Climate: The Cyprus climate during July is hot and dry during the day, but mild at night. Temperatures during the day vary from 30 - 38 degrees C. Sea water is warm and pleasant and ideal for swimming. Larnaca / Pafos Airports: The island is easily accessible by air from all major European and Middle East cities. Larnaka airport is forty-five minutes drive from the Sheraton Hotel at Limassol and Pafos airport is about one and a half hours. A taxi ride from Larnaka airport to the Sheraton costs around CYL20 and from Paphos airport around CYL30. Limassol can also be accessed by sea from major seaports in the Middle East and Europe. This is surrounded by a Venetian Wall with many bastions. Within the wall numerous narrow streets beg to be explored with many shops, market places, churches taverns and picturesque houses. A visit to the Archaeological Museum will also be attempted if time permits. Souvlaki will be enjoyed out in the open. (3) Wednesday, July 12, 1995, Gala Dinner (4) Thursday, July 13, 1995, Afternoon guided tour to Troodos The impressive Troodos mountain range stretches across most of the western side of Cyprus, offering cool sanctuary and idyllic hours spent in long walks in its scented pine forests in summer and winter sports and skiing in winter. Here are the many famous mountain resorts, Byzantine monasteries and churches on mountain peaks, and nestling in its valleys and picturesque mountain villages clinging to terraced hill slopes. The area has been known since ancient times for its mines, and in the Byzantine period it became a great center of Byzantine art, as churches and monasteries were built in the mountains, away from the threatened coastline. Nine Byzantine churches in the Troodos mountains are included in the official UNESCO list of cultural treasures of the World's heritage: Stavros tou Ayiasmatos, Panayia tou Araka, Timiou Stavrou at Pelendri, Ayios Nikolaos tis Stegis, Panayia Podithou, Assinou, Ayios Ioannis Lampadistis, Panayia tou Moutoula, and Archangle Michael at Pedhoulas. (5) Friday, July 14, 1995, Day Trip to Kourion and Pafos Some miles out of Limassol is the ancient city of Kourion in a beautiful setting with a Graeco-Roman theater and magnificent mosaics. Pafos, in the southwest of the island, holds many treasures. Pafos focuses around an attractive little harbor. It nestles in the foot of the Troodos Mountains which adds to the beauty of the area. Pafos combines modern charms with history. The area which was once the ancient capital of the island is entwined with Greek mythology and the legendary birth of Aphrodite on her shores. Sites associated with this are the chunky rocks of her birthplace known as Aphrodite Rocks, sanctuaries, the Baths of Aphrodite at Polis and Fountain of Love or Fontana Amorosa at the Akamas peninsula. Fresh fish will be waiting for us at a seaside restaurant. (6) Cruises to the Holyland and Egypt Short 2-3 day cruises are offered. Contact the official travel agent of the conference.
