Surge Tank Control: A Case Study in Robust Nonlinear Control
Prof. Richard Vinter (Imperial College)
Surge tanks are used to dampen hazardous fluctuations
in liquid flow . Surge tank control is a representative of
a class of interesting controller design problems, in which
we seek to minimize, in some sense, the likelihood of occurence
of some catastrophic event; in this case overflow or
emptying of the tank. Various formulations of the surge tank
control problem, stochastic and deterministic, will be
discussed. A solution is obtained in certain cases,
by means of games theoretic methods.
