Intelligent Control Solutions !

Professor Ron Leigh (Intelligent Control Solutions Ltd and Brunel University)

The subject of control is so fascinating that for many year now, idealists have, understandably, toured the world hoping to find problems worthy of the theory. However, real problems can rarely be compartmentalised and a rather catholic view needs to be taken as to what constitutes a control problem. I shall illustrate by an old example, how the task of solving a simple control problem can quicky lead one into novel territory and then move immediately to more recent work on the estimation of process variables that are needed for control but that cannot be measured adequately by sensors. Next, I will describe scenarios of current and future research intended for application to the control of batch processes. The emphasis here is on making intelligent use of historic process data. If time allows, I will discuss an underlying message of the talk which is, roughly, the over-riding importance and the inherent difficulty of system modelling.
